Is “shock and awe” a common expression? I never heard it said.
+2
Level 80
Jun 18, 2018
The phrase was coined in the 1990s to describe a military tactic of using rapidly deployed overwhelming force against an inferior foe to cause disorientation and a loss of the will to fight. I think it was most famously used by the Bush administration to describe the tactics it planned to employ against Saddam Hussein during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, but it has been used since then plenty of times, often to parody or critique said administration, for instance in the film Avatar.
