That reminds me of a comedian in the mid-'80s who yelled at Ethiopians for their presumed stupidity in choosing to live in a desert. The central highlands which cover much of Ethiopian are among the greenest, most fertile places on Earth. By the way, Ethiopia (and Eritrea) probably have Africa's finest cuisine, explaining the proliferation of restaurants serving that food across much of the world.

Surprised by Ethiopia, not by Kazakhstan. Central Asian culture is hugely dependent on the horse.

I guessed Ethiopia because horses are used as a main form of transport in the highlands. In some places you see more horse carts than tuk tuks or cars!

since Mongolia, Russia and China were listed, It seemed like a logical guess to try their neighbor Kazakhstan.

Horses were first domesticated in central Asia. Probably around Turkmenistan.

There just aren't that many people in Australia. And the farmers/stockmen who are there raise way more cattle and sheep than horses.

I was sure France would be on here and it looks like it should be with the figures here: https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2015/jun/12/how-many-horses-european-union-eu-equine-census-population Also tried Ireland as they are big on racing but I guess they are just don't have the space some of the others here have - only about 100,000

Sometimes I just wish all the countries would get redivided and be equally big, so quizzes like this actually tells you something about the culture instead of the size.

With this quiz it is not AS much the case, but it did remind me of all those quizzes where it would be 90% name the biggest countries, plus a few that actually really stand out in that theme.

Actually redividing the people would be great too, no more "we are better than you bullshit" (not that I actually think that would work out though... some think they are better where ever and with whomever you put them... still less us and them, more individuals)

Description states "domesticated" horses... Do these countries change much if counting wild horses too? Or would they just not be able to get an accurate number?
+2

Interesting point.

The number of truly wild horses - Przewalski's - is miniscule.

But feral horses might be a large part of say Australia's horse population.

People seem surprised about Ethiopia, which is one of the most populated countries in Africa, but what about Chad??? Seems pretty random to me, but there must be a good explanation to explain this anomaly.

Top 10 countries with camels ok, but horses?
