I'm really suprised at how many people got the name of a guy who finished 3rd in the 1992 Presidential election. Is this man well-known or something? (from a curious non-American)
Well, the Ross Perot case is rather well-known, even outside the US, because he was one of the rare independant candidates to ever get a serious score.
Yeah, usually the third place finisher is from a very minor party and ends up with like .00000002% of the popular vote. Ross Perot was actually included in debates and everything, and he wound up with nearly 20% of the total vote. No third party has ever come close to that since then, but this year's (2016's) Libertarian slate comprises two former Republicans who were very popular governors in their day. They might have the biggest non-big-two showing since Perot (although nowhere as big as his, I can't imagine).
Yeah, that was... memorable for all the wrong reasons. I heard about it through an American channel I follow on YT, and when I heard that line, I just had to stare into the distance for a minute and think about everything.
He is also a very memorable business leader with "larger than life" personality. He personally funded a mission to rescue his endangered employees in Iran. His debate performances were legendary, lecturing the other candidates "Can I finish?!?!"
Perot received a much larger share of votes (almost 20%) than is typical for "third party" candidates. Bill Clinton would probably not have won the election if not for Perot and Bush splitting the conservative vote.
The analysis of results shows that Perot didn't have a significant influence either way. Of course it's a big question what would happen if he didn't participate at all.
Perot also had the distinction of being left-handed, as were the other two candidates. No matter who had won, we would have ended up with a lefty POTUS.
Actually, the Green Party, Libertarians, and Socialists usually manage to get candidates on the ballot, but as you just proved, no one ever thinks anything of them :-)
Ross Perot is a very important third-party candidate in history though. If not for him, Bush Sr. likely would have been re-elected and Clinton would not have become president (that election).
As a non American, I just took the quiz out of curiosity. Impressed that I got 10/20. NOT impressed with only one point! Surely 50% deserves at least 2?!
I was told by a Catholic girlfriend that every family has to give a daughter the middle name, Mary. I was surprised when that didn't work, and tried Marie just for the hell of it.
My mom would never spring for the big box of crayons. So thanks to "Snatch" for making me aware of periwinkle's existence. I'll forever hear Brad Pitt saying, "She's terribly partial to the periwinkle blue".
I can't comment on the difficulty of Europe centered quizzes, in general, but as best I recall, most aren't ridiculously easy or superficial for this American. I found this particular American-centered quiz to be quite easy - my only stumbling block was the Mary / Maria / Marie question, that others have commented on.
