Texas was inspired by the Republic of the Rio Grande's flag. I'm not sure what Chile's was inspired by, but both deliberately decided to use "USA colours" independently of each other.
Best flag of all--New Mexico, hands down. Great job putting their flag at the top left to introduce this quiz properly! Jamaica has the best national flag; New Mexico best state flag.
I think Canada has the best national flag. Everyone else is all stars and shields and suns, but there is nothing like that bright red maple leaf on a white field. So distinct and iconic.
bruh half of these look the exact same. they're just blue with a bunch of complicated stuff in the midle. props to the states that actually have original state flags.
A lot of these states didn't have flags until the late 1800's, and I think they made them quickly to put them on official stamps or something like that? So a lot of states haven't felt the need to change theirs in decades, as doing so takes time, effort and money.
I've been saying this forever but yeah a lot of these states desperately need new flags. Most are just blue with the state seal. Pretty boring, bland, and don't do a good job describing something about the state like colors, animals, or other symbols.
This isn't urgent, but Utah recently approved a new flag set to be used in 2024. Maybe that's a good time to overhaul some of the other flags on here that need smaller updates
i am actually sad, i only got 24, yet it is better than 75.6%, for people who need help kentucky is the one of only two commonwealth states, along with Virginia.
It's not super relevant at the moment, but both Mississippi and Utah's new flags suck. The only flags I would call truly bad on the list are Connecticut and Minnesota.
HARD Disagree with you there. Mississippi's new flag is among the best in the nation, and Utah's, while not as good, is a marked improvement from the boring "state seal on blue background" that most states have.
Good point, even though it might not be everyone's cup of sweet tea, I think we can all agree it's better than the version that had the Confederate battle flag on it...
i don't know why everyone is hating on the new utah flag. it's fantastic. the symbolism, colors, simplicity, and just general upgrade from the old stupid seal on blue design are amazing
I don't really understand why you removed the blank space on the flags. Especially with states like West Virginia, it was much harder to recognize because you didn't include the blue border around it.
Dont know actually, but i did find a video saying “Rhode Island’s flag is actually illegal, it actually needs to be rectangular for it to be legal” then there was a part where there were some flags on a shopping app that had a yellow outline (of course they were rectangular, but the same placement as the flag you see now)
Minnesota's new flag is honestly the best state flag. The lighter blue looks like Minnesota and if you rotate it 90º it's a mountain under the North Star. Beautiful job Minnesota.
Minnesota’s flag is awful. It’s very monochromatic with blues/greens. The lines on the flag are all straight. It’s very jarring, especially juxtaposed with the other flags, most of which are colorful and flowing. Then there is boxy, bland Minnesota. Just sticks out, and not in a good way.
I disagree with some of your reasoning, but I do agree that I do not like Minnesota's new flag. It's not a bad flag mind you, generally good flag design. My problem is that it looks more befitting of a city flag than it does a state flag. It lacks any personality and charm that the other state flags have, including Utah and Mississippi's new flags which do capture that essence while also improving the flag.
the original redesign with the tricolor was fantastic. not sure why the committee got rid of the tricolor and replaced it with the flat light blue field
Yes, it is horrible, I personally liked the first design they chose, the one similar to this one but with green white and sky blue stripes, that looked awesome
oh my goddddd this is going to be a hard quiz. I'm not American, but PLEASE change your seal on bedsheet flags to make them more distinctive!!! I couldn't even guess which state they belonged to! Props to Utah and Minnesota for making themselves stand out. Hope other states follow
I agree with this, but disagree with the Minnesota bit. Utah & Mississippi have excellent distinctive flags now, but Minnesota's is so bland and corporate. Kinda works in a way given how many big companies are from the Twin Cities (like 3M which technically stands for "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company")
I'm from Texas & am blessed to have a state with a lovely flag. Those darn North Carolinians copied ours 50 years after us!
I don't like the current iteration of the Minnesota flag either. Why'd they get rid of the one with green and white? That one was so much better! It would've been a top 10 US flag for sure, but they just had to make it bland smh >:(
And yeah Texas' flag is iconic, but imo the best one has to go to New Mexico. Maryland is a close second. The fact that both of them don't have the color blue is not a coincidence ;)
some people just want the last say in things. i guess the flag comitee looked at the redesign and made an unneeded tweak. still betted than the original SOB tho
the redesign was a lot better, the tricolor looked fantastic. i agree that new mexico and utah both have fantastic flags, but as a veteran Texan i'm obligated to rank it the best in the nation (and I currently live in Utah lol)
Well duh their flags were changed a long time ago, and are distinctive! I mentioned Utah and Minnesota because they recently took the steps to change their flags, hoping other states follow them
the actual redesign for Minnesota that someone submitted was good. the state modified it before making it the official flag tho so it's a lot more basic. previously it had a tricolor with colors symbolizing the snow, fields, and lakes, instead of a plain light blue field.
it's still better, though, because it makes the flag distinctive (no more seal on blue) and easy to draw.
Really goes to show how terrible these flags are. So undistinctive that they actually need their name on it so you actually know which state they belong to.If you need to write your name on your flag, that flag failed.
America has a real mix of some really good flags and some truly awful ones. I like that some of the states are getting rid of their poor blue-field ones and replacing them with more imaginative distinct designs.
if you have to put the name of what you are representing on the flag, you have failed

They're almost impossible to differentiate from a distance.

I think Mississippi's is great though, captures a distinctive natural beauty of the South with colors that contrast well.
it's still better, though, because it makes the flag distinctive (no more seal on blue) and easy to draw.
Flag nerd rant over
so many U.S. state flags honestly suck. thanks for putting texas first tho :)
