The explanatory post appears to have disappeared. My take was that the lacrosse equipment was a tip of the hat to Johns Hopkins University, whose lacrosse team has won 9 NCAA National Championships, second only to Syracuse's 10.
Also in Men's College lacrosse, the State of Maryland has the most titles with 14, the most second place awards (25) and the most colleges to win a title, with 5 different schools winning.
I worked in Baltimore City schools for a few years and was surprised to find that inner city middle schools had lacrosse as a team sport. Even if they only offered 2 or 3 sports, lacrosse was almost always one of them.
Minnesota has more Swedes and more Norwegians than any other state. It has about 50% more Norwegians than Swedes. Minensota has the highest percentage of Swedes of any state, but it is second to North Dakota in percentage of Norwegians.
I, too, was confused by Swedish flag in MN. Being a Hoosier, I do understand that our reputation for basketball hysteria justifiably is fading between IU not winning a banner since the 80s and AAU-ification of the pre-college game.
Yep, Mayo Clinic. And we do have lots of Swedes in MN. I recall going to a Davis Cup match in Minneapolis in 1991 between Sweden and the USA; there was a TON of Swedish support. Really fun matches too with Sampras, Courier, and Agassi coached by McEnroe vs. Stefan Edberg, Anders Jarryd, etc. from Sweden.
So Eutychus's comment must have been deleted since I don't see anything related to Maryland. The lacrosse thing threw me off too; not sure the significance, but it's not a sport I follow.
I picked it up because of crab cakes and the terrapins. Was the native tribe that first played lacrosse from Maryland? Or does that emoji have some other significance? I thought it came from tribes further north.
So that people that dont read the comments can keep asking the same question.. (I think it is the vikings though, ancestry seems farfetched and even I have heard of the vikings, I know nothing about sports, and am not from the US)
Looks like the comments disappeared explaining the connection between Maryland and lacrosse. Lacrosse became the official team sport of Maryland in 2014. Anyone fathom to guess what the official state sport of Maryland is?
There is a beehive on the flag and the bees are a symbol of the Mormons because of how they work hard and work together. At least, thats what found through my own research,
For the people of Utah, the beehive symbolizes the Utah community as each person in Utah works together to support and help one another and to create a successful industry. Industry was adopted as Utah's state motto in 1959. It is listed on these statues as well as on Utah's state seal and state flag.
I will repeat the comment about no saguaros in New Mexico. They only occur in the Sonoran desert of Arizona and California (within the US) as well as Mexico. Maybe find an atomic bomb emoji.
Or- and I know this is a crazy thought for this site- you could accept that a clue/question suffices for the purposes of the quiz without reaching your level of pedantry
