What's the caveat about? A stadium in New Jersey?

The New York Jets/Giants play in a stadium located in New Jersey.

The caveat about nitpickers is nonsensical seeing as the title emphasizes states with exactly one team. New Jersey is a United States state with exactly 3 major pro sports teams.

This will need to be updated next year when the Raiders move to Las Vegas.

Based on the team name, which state owns the New England Patriots? I've seen it claimed that Foxborough is more a suburb of Providence than of Boston.

That claim would be very wrong.

It doesn't matter which city it's a suburb of. Foxborough is located entirely in Massachusetts.

Well, for consistency, East Rutherford is located entirely in New Jersey. I see cpgatbyu's point.

this is how it works for ones who don't understand ... if a team is named a geographical region and not a state, then the official state location defaults to where the team plays. Two NFL examples are the patriots and panthers. Panthers are North Carolina and patriots are Massachusetts. However, for the giants and jets they are the NEW YORK football team in the name in the title so it is still a New York franchise. If we were to not apply this rule then technically Maryland would have two teams even though dc has one and Baltimore has one.

This is why we put the nitpicker caveat up.

But still, if based solely on the team name, then an argument could be made that Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire all have a team...

Read the disclaimer and immediately thought it was referring to the Giants/Jets playing in New Jersey... only one I ended up missing is New Jersey.

Claiming the Giants and Jets are New York teams is like claiming Notre Dame is an Illinois team. The caveat makes the quiz entirely incorrect.

...no, it isn't. They're called the New York Jets and the New York Giants. Are they called the Illinois Fighting Irish? No? Then it's not the same thing.

This exactly. The Jets and Giants are explicitly New York teams. No one has ever said my favorite team is the "New Jersey Giants".

I disagree with both of you. Illinois Fighting Irish thing is a bad one since the team is nowhere close to Illinois and for Giants and Jets, they're the only one in the whole business keeping the New York name for obvious business reasons while operating in a different state. They just simply do not operate in New York and are not New York teams as far as states go.

The Devils are not calling themselves the New York Devils. The Nets did change their name upon moving to New Jersey after the merger.

Bills kind of also get a pass for not operating in their citiy anymore, but on the other side, Cardinals are not calling themselves the Phoenix Cardinals and Warriors did also change their name upon moving to Oakland.

"New York" in the team name obviously refers to the City of New York metropolitan area, not the New York State Jets. Nobody will ever rename the Buffalo Sabres as the New York Sabres because of the overwhelming connotation to the City of New York.

that caveat is so far from a nitpick, Earth is closer to Andromeda. Write a proper quiz and you wouldn't have to worry about such comments
