Harpers Ferry is also the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, which is the psychological halfway point when you thru hike. Somewhere in a binder there is a polaroid picture of my bearded self. ("The Crusher' was actually my trail name on my 2010 thru hike.) Shout out to all other thru hikers out there!
Q: On November 14, 1970, 37 players and 8 coaches of this University's football team were killed (along with 25 supporters and 5 crew members) in a plane crash while returning home from an away game.
Fun Fact: Me and my dad are good friends with John Denver's brother here in Ireland and we call him skelletor because of how clearly we can see he uses drugs on the daily.
John Denver was not the principal author of Take Me Home, Country Roads. It was written mostly by a husband and wife team. They showed what they had to Denver, who wanted the song for himself, and the three of them finished it together. But most of the iconic lyrics and the verse and chorus melodies were written before Denver got involved.
Bill Danoff! He was also a singer, so at the very least Bill Danoff should be accepted. Although .001% will guess that, but I actually tried it first. Danoff toyed with the "Massachusetts" first instead of "West Virginia" as they have the same number of syllables.
Credit should also go to his then-wife Mary Catherine "Taffy" Nivert-Danoff. And the song originated from a roadtrip through Maryland. Alas, the state was one syllable short.
A lot of western Maryland is a lot like West Virginia, but as Maryland is a much wealthier state, the roads and other public services are much better. There are many places where you can be on a paved road with painted lines in Maryland and then cross into West Virginia on a gravel road.
All the highway signs leading into West Virginia say "Wild and Wonderful," not "The Mountain State." How long do those signs have to be there for it to count as a state nickname?
Nice Quiz! ⭐
Take me home, country roads
I hear her voice in the mornin' hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Drivin' down the road, I get a feelin'
That I should've been home yesterday, yesterday!
