The clue "to suck up" is a bit too ambiguous for my taste. If I had gone down the road of ingratiating oneself to a superior and not toward vacuums and straws, I surely would have gotten it.
Could Evergreen have a clearer clue? There are many types of evergreen, of which conifer is one type...so I was thinking of species rather than a broader definition.
Trees in tropical areas are mostly broadleaf and evergreen. The association between deciduousness and broadleaf trees is only strong in temperate and boreal places that have very distinct seasonal changes or extreme heat that causes them to lose their leaves on summer.
Albeit more rare, there are also deciduous conifers like Larches.
I think the question is okay, but it is more ambiguous to people in the southern hemisphere and the topics. And answers like white pine or redwood or redcedar also fit the clue.
