May Day is international, celebrated in most European countries and several non-European ones. It is misleading to associate it with the Soviet Union as it originated in the socialist and communist communities of Chicago in the late 19th century. Also, Labour day should be accepted.
Guy Fawkes Day is not a holiday, it's an ordinary working day - but the fun starts after sunset! Is there a different word to "holiday" that would work here?
Chinese New Year is also commonly called Spring Festival, which is also what they call it in Chinese. It's more accurate than calling it Chinese New Year too anyway in my opinion, since lots of other countries also celebrate it.
Soviet union is no longer a thing. I think the country you're looking for is Russia. May Day is celebrated in a lot of Europe as well as parts of North America.
Really? And why not خمسة de Mayo, Lima de Mayo, Five de Mayo, Vijf de Mayo, Fünf de Mayo, Cinq de Mayo, πέντε de Mayo, पाँच de Mayo, いつ de Mayo, 다섯 de Mayo, 五 de Mayo, Babŭngyi-mŭringya de Mayo or Senk de Mayo?
In the Eastern Orthodox Church (considered part of the Christian world), Lent begins on a Monday, not a Wednesday. The area of celebration should be changed to exclude the Eastern Orthodox if you want to be as accurate as possible.
Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated by the state of Puebla and the US NOOOOOT all of Mexico; FYI September 15-16 is usually the celebration time for independence not May 5th.
Add me to the Cinco de Mayo not being in celebrated in Mexico group. I live in Baja and they have no idea what it is and don't care. May 10 is mother's day and May 1 is labor day/may day. They celebrate those. Not the 5th
I think the 'joke' is that most norteamericanos - us gringos - think it's "Mexican Independence Day, bro" when in fact those who have traveled frequently to the wonderful nation of Mexico know that is, in fact, in mid-September. As it is in many Latin American countries.
You should make a note that Cinco de Mayo is only a celebrated holiday in the USA and the Mexican state of Puebla. It isn't significant at all in the rest of the nation.
It might lower the percentages but better and more accurate for the Muslim holidays would be eid al-fitr and eid al-adha. They tie in to Ramadan and Hajj and are the only officially sanctioned holiDAYS in the Quran, as far as I know.
Armistice day is celebrated as Veterans Day in the US, and since the US is a ww1 Ally, that should be accepted as a type in. Also, Ramadan isn’t a holiday, it is a whole month, so shouldn’t be counted( along with other month long holidays)
- "Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity" says Wikipedia, as the Orthodox start it on Clean Monday
- Labour Day should be accepted
- Bastille Day's name is questionable at least
I love that May 5 is accepted for May 5.
