I've never liked how the city Dnipro and the river Dnieper are transliterated into English differently even though they are spelled the same in Ukrainian. I always end up spelling the city wrong in English, even though it follows the Ukrainian better. Because I'm dumb I guess.
I understand why but... there are not many countries where we follow "local" spellings versus American English spellings. Munich/Munchen, Rome/Roma, Jerusalem/Yerushalayim, Hong Kong/Xianggang and so on.
I respect that this is now changed but do find it annoying the way some people love to push changes to existing language...
Unfortunately did better than I would have two weeks ago. Kiev is the transliteration from Russian. Kyiv is the transliteration from Ukrainian. Given the current context, it makes a difference.
