JetPunk considers Crimea to be controlled by Russia, whether or not they actually should have it or legally acquired it.

I've never liked how the city Dnipro and the river Dnieper are transliterated into English differently even though they are spelled the same in Ukrainian. I always end up spelling the city wrong in English, even though it follows the Ukrainian better. Because I'm dumb I guess.

Good quiz! But please accept Dnipro, it is the official name by now. And generally more alternative spellings. Kryvy / Kryvi / Kryvy Ri

This is true, but seeing as Russia at this time controls Crimea I decided to remove the Crimean cities from this list

I and most of the world do not view Luhansk and Donetsk as being separate from Ukraine

Spotlighted the quiz. I see that I am not the only one thinking about Ukraine now. Very sad to see what is happening.

I understand why but... there are not many countries where we follow "local" spellings versus American English spellings. Munich/Munchen, Rome/Roma, Jerusalem/Yerushalayim, Hong Kong/Xianggang and so on.

I respect that this is now changed but do find it annoying the way some people love to push changes to existing language...

The local spelling would be Київ

I think Kiev and Kyiv are used more interchangeably in English now than in the past, that’s the only reason for the change here :)

Unfortunately did better than I would have two weeks ago. Kiev is the transliteration from Russian. Kyiv is the transliteration from Ukrainian. Given the current context, it makes a difference.

Sevastopol should make the list - it has a population of over 450,000 according to citypopulation.de.
