I believe that's because Hawaii allows their programs to select their name from three choices (Warriors, Rainbow Warriors, and Rainbows). This may have since changed, and now all teams are Rainbow Warriors, but I'm not positive.
As an American who doesn't really follow college sports, I can offer my best theory. College sports are just like professional sports, except there's more of a vested interest because many of the fans were/are a part of the institution they're now supporting. Also, people who don't live near big cities don't have a professional team to support, and college is the next best thing.
I feel like if you put raiders, you should get all of the "raiders" teams (e.g. middle tenn. blue raiders, texas tech red raiders, etc.). This could apply to quite a few names.
And if Irish is accepted for "fighting irish", shouldn't "bulldogs" be accepted for "runnin' bulldogs"?
LIU - Brooklyn has merged their athletics with LIU - Post to just become the Long Island Sharks. Liberty is now part of the Atlantic Sun conference. North Alabama Lions are now part of the Atlantic Sun, Merrimack Warriors are part of the Northeast and California Baptist Lancers are part of the Western Athletic.
Pretty sure LIU went from the Blackbirds to the Sharks. Not sure where you got Knights from.
Also, a number of new schools have joined the DI ranks (Merrimack Warriors, Bellarmine Knights, Dixie State Trailblazers, Tarleton Texans, and UC San Diego Tritons).
It pisses me off I have to put "Golden gophers" for Minnesota....No one calls them that. Why not accept "Gophers"....you don't make us put "fighting" in front camels or Irish.

Because I saw Army beat them 65-0 in person. (In football)
Lindenwood Lions (Ohio Valley)
Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (Ohio Valley)
Stonehill Skyhawks(Northeast)
Texas A&M Commerce Lions (Southland)
Also, I'm pretty sure Dixie State has changed its name to Utah Tech.
And Valpo is the beacons now.
Huskers for Nebraska (Cornhuskers)
Gophers for Minnesota (Golden Gophers)
Raiders/Knights for all of the Color Raiders/Knights
