So many great games. Funny I saw a list of best Genesis games the other day... Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, and their inferior versions of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were all in the top 5. On the SNES list.. Aladdin ends up #60. No wonder Nintendo won the 16-bit wars.
Biggest omission that springs to mind is probably Cybernator. Great game.
Not sure about the sequels, but Genesis had the superior version of the first Mortal Kombat because Nintendo was squeamish about blood and censored the heck out of the game.
The SNES version of Mortal Kombat was at least comparable to the Genesis version. All the Genesis had going for it really was red pixels. And MK2 on the SNES was much better, and MK2 was far superior to MK1. Every Street Fighter game was also much better on the SNES. Not a fair match up.
Several of the fatalities were changed in the first Mortal Kombat game for the home release, to be something less bloody. That was actually the origin of Sub-Zero's finisher where he freezes the opponent's body and then shatters it. His original fatality in the first game was to rip their head (with the spine still attached) off their body and then hold it up. The Genesis version still has that fatality (and the others that were changed) if you put in the blood code, whereas SNES didn't have that code. But from the second game onward, they were usually identical, and then the SNES's superior hardware made it the better game.
I beat all of these games countless times. I felt a pretty big sense of accomplishment upon beating M. Bison the first time but eventually they were all easy to me.
Maybe because Aladdin on the megadrive is superior the snes version^^ But I think that IGN missed alot of titles, the megadrive have an awesome library, I say on the same level as the SNES. But yeah, both are great consoles.
Nah, not really. If you check out multi-console video game magazine reviews from the period, compare the scores they gave to games for either system, the SNES beats the pants off the Genesis. It's really not even close. Mario games were better than Sonic games. Final Fantasy and Zelda games were better than Phantasy Star. Fighting games were always better on the SNES. Action/adventure games, RPGs, and racing were all better on SNES. and then there were games on SNES like Star Fox, Pilotwings, F-Zero, etc. for which Sega had nothing comparable. Genesis had a few good shooters and sports titles, and Toejam & Earl, that's about it.
Perhaps you could add some variety to the entries? I guessed a dozen of them that it turned out were missing a "Super" or the title was arranged a little differently than I remembered.
If you mean the games on the list, this is IGN's choice of Top 100, not mine. Are there games where you think alternate spellings or titles should be accepted?
I think he was saying that you should allow more type-ins. Like accept Star Wars for Super Star Wars. Though that one works... maybe some others don't.
You should accept more answers, like I wrote Area 88 but was not accepted for U.N squadron, same goes for Illusion of time and some others. Other then that, fun quiz=)
Originally, yes. They were separate games for the NES and Game Boy. They were also sold as a single cartridge containing both games on the SNES. Try a Google image search for "tetris dr mario snes" and you can see the cartridge. I'm quite surprised that IGN would include that on their list given that it's just a port of two NES games, but they did.
Man, i'm angry with myself didn't get even 50%. My Snes is still in my closet, the only video game that i have in my life. But in my small city, we have few options at the stores, like bomberman (my prefered one) and megaman X. Still have so much to know.
Even if you remember all the big titles (and I usually forget at least one), there are a lot of obscure games on this list. There are definitely a couple of game hipsters working at IGN.
Totally agree. I would never put it anywhere near that high if I were ranking them myself. But if it HAD been my list, most of the top 20 would have been RPGs and that's probably not fair either.
Tell me about it! I can only remember Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy and Kirby's Adventure on the NES. I thought if I let it just take "Kirby" though, that would be too easy.
I can’t believe IGN ranked Donkey Kong Country 2 16th. It is a perfect game and needs to be top 3 (I’ll accept Link to the Past at 1, though DKC 2’s maybe even better than THAT).
Super Metroid is always overrated. Top 10? Sure. But somewhere between 8-10 and absolutely behind DKC 2, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy III (VI), and more.

For example, I remember there being a bunch of Kirby games, but not how each one was separately named.

It does sadden me playing it though to realise how many great games Europe missed out on at the time though.
