The United States Census Bureau defines Urbanized Areas, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas.

Urbanized Areas are just that.

MSAs are rather random areas based strictly on counties, whether the county is 600 square kilometers of surrounding populace or 50,000 square kilometers. It may also contain other Urbanized Areas and Urban Clusters (population 5,000 to 49,999) that are geographically remote from the Urbanized Area giving its name to the MSA. It can contain urban population directly part of another Urbanized Area with its own MSA.

These statistics are from the Consolidated Statistical Areas, which are just large market and broadcast areas combining multiple county based MSAs.

The legitimate, official U.S. Census Bureau populations of the Urbanized Areas are:

Stockton: 370,583

Harrisburg: 444,474

I simply cannot believe that Rotterdam is so high on this list. The city itself has 625.000 inhabitans. To come 3.250.000 inhabitans in the urban area you have to at least add The Hague and maybe even Amsterdam which are other cities and shouldnt count.

According to citypopulation.de, Odessa has a population of about 1.11 million - which would put its rank at #544. Pretoria is included within the Johannesburg urban area, and Sharjah is located in Dubai's urban area.

Now my lowest guesses are George Town (Malaysia, 22%), Benin City (Nigeria, 21%), Hefei (China, 21%), Merida (Mexico, 21%), Cotonou (Benin, 20%), Natal (Brazil, 19%), Faisalabad (somewhere in Asia, 19%), Leon (Mexico, 17%), São Luis (Brazil, 16%), Campinas (Brazil, 16%), Goiania (Brazil again, 14%), Yogyakarta (Indonesia, 13%), Huainan (China, 13%), Naha (China, 13%), and Huai'an (China, 6%). I forgot Dammam this time though :(. I found Huainan when guessing Hainan the island and I found Huai'an when guessing Huainan.

Thanks for the catch. I thought it might be in India, since India also had Hyderabad.

The percentages have gone up from the reset (people are counted as taking it for the first time even if they aren't). My lowest are Goiania (28%), Yogyakarta (21%), Tainan (20%), Taichung (17%), Yangzhou (12%), and Huai'an (9%), since I recently took the time to remember the 3 "Tai" cities of Taiwan (Taipei, Tainan, Taichung). I forgot about George Town and Merida.

I don't understand the data for Hartford, Wisconsin. I did a little digging and it looks like it's a city of approximately 15,000 that's part of the Milwaukee metro area. Where does the 1,680,000 figure come from -- and shouldn't it be lumped together with Milwaukee?

Yes, but seeing as this quiz features no cities on Jeju island, I don't think it really matters. However, the island that the city of Naha is located on (Okinawa Island) is missing from the map. I could draw it out but it would be trivial as it would be too small (the city dot itself would occupy more area than the island on the map) so most people wouldn't notice it.

Once again I am amazed by how terrible citypopulation is with Chinese cities. Others have spoken about their incredibly suspicious inclusion of Shenzhen within the Guangzhou urban area, but take other examples like the extremely implausible Jiangyin over neighboring-and-substantially-more-populous Changzhou. Like I get that it's difficult and there aren't always clear answers but what possible criteria make that make sense?

This quiz is so wrong! In Poland it should be Cracow (Kraków) and Warsaw. They have been the biggest cities for centuries... tho. Dont know how could you make mistake like that. Also data for "Katowice" is still wrong

Data from this website always seems a little fishy! Regardless this was a really cool quiz, I got 346, I got Cangnan at 2%, but somehow I missed DELHI...

Knowing lots of Chinese cities helped, must have got about 75 from there alone which made up for my terrible performance in the US and South America lol!

I think the suburbs and surrounding cities of New York spread out over a very large area and have slightly more people, even though they are more sparsely populated than Beijing. But I am not American or Chinese so idk
