IlikeLuigi The countries of the world quiz is technically wrong, since most countries consider Crimea Ukranian. On a bit of a personal note, I believe it is very wrong that Jetpunk is supporting Russia in this act.
Whether Jetpunk classes Palestine independent or not, whether it classes Crimea as Ukrainian or Russian, doesn't mean that it is the truth. To look at the truth, look at what actual world leaders say, instead of a website made by two normal people.
But then again you likely aren't gonna change the minds of the creators, so you can complain about the website's decisions, but in the end, you get what you are given.
Correct. JetPunk says that Crimea is in Russia. It makes no claim as to what country Crimea *should* be in.
If you want to support Ukraine, send some money to a relief charity there. It isn't helpful to argue whether a quiz site should meaninglessly change their maps.
I think too it's based on personal opinion. I can't say that I support Russia , but we have Kosovo case : But we have a conflict in Kosovo : in one conflict, the world supports Ukraine, part of whose territory was annexed against the laws of Ukraine , and in another conflict, the world supports Kosovo, which became an independent country bypassing the laws of Serbia. So I think there are double standards here
I can see how it would feel like a case of double standards but the circumstances are very different.
There was an emergency situation in Kosovo. The dictatorial regime of Milosevic had launched a widespread campaign against the Kosovan population. Kosovans were not safe under Yugoslavian control. Milosevic had already commited crimes against humanity and attempted genocide against the Bosnian and was doing it again to the Kosovans.
None of this applies to Crimea as part of Ukraine. It is under Russian occupation that the indigenous Crimean Tatar population have been persecuted, people have been forced disappearances without explanation and many other human rights abuses.
The Russian occupation of Crimea has al ot of parallels with Nazi Germany's occupation of Sudetenland. And just how Nazi Germany occupied the rest of Czechislovakia at a later time, Putin's regime returns to try and take over the rest of Ukraine.
Although the Russian annexation was unjust, the real reality of the situation is that it is still owned by Russia. Personally, I support Ukrainian ownership of Crimea but in reality, it is owned by Russia.
Miecraft: yes, somewhat. More accurate would be to say that they invaded Crimea (and forced sham/illegal referendums to join Russia there) because they were afraid of losing control over their naval base in Sevastopol, which they had been leasing from Ukraine ever since the fall of the USSR and felt secure that this lease would continue to be renewed as long as the leaders in Kyiv were corrupt puppets of Moscow. When the political situation in Ukraine began to change and the will of the people started finding expression, and some of those corrupt puppets got chased out of the country, Moscow got nervous and decided to take by force what they were afraid they would lose politically to an strong and independent Ukraine.
Sevastopol is not the only place in Russia that touches the Black Sea, but it is their only major warm water naval base. They have others that are much smaller.
Hows the illegal war going? The supposed might of the Russian army has been revealed as a paper tiger, even when they use a thuggish PMC group to distance the war crimes that Russia leaves in its destructive wake..
Legally (insofar as such matters are governed by law; which in reality is very little), rightfully (and morally), and historically (back to 1954 anyway) it is Ukraine, and it's not unreasonable to think that it may again be part of Ukraine in more practical ways by the end of 2023 if not earlier.
De facto it is currently a part of Russia and has been since 2014, as abominable as Putin and his regime are and as deplorable as all those who defend, excuse, or support them continue to be.
JetPunk seems to favor de facto sovereignty above those other things. Which is fine. Reality is not what you wish it to be and I was never one of those people who was fine with lying if I felt it suited some greater purpose or because I felt people were too stupid to hear the truth and make sense of it, even though many of the events of the past decade have me repeatedly revising my opinion of global intellect downward.
All this said I was one of those 70% who answered Ukraine. Russia needs to be broken apart and Putin should spend the next 10 winters in a stockade in Red Square next to all of his enablers including those in some international media and politics.
As it stands factually it is part of russia in the same way hawaii is part of the usa , an illegal invasion and annex. When a place wants to be free from a great power but it can’t then it is in this situation where even if the world disagrees there is little that can be done.
There is no easy answer to this one. Yes, Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 and this was not recognised by most. It must however be taken into account that most of the locals see themselves as Russians rather than Ukrainians. This does not mean that I am pro Russia in any way, I am 100% against the war in Ukraine.
