Jains believe that the religion has existed since the beginning of the universe itself. They also believe in a few specific religious leaders who attain salvation to be gods (called tirthankaras). In total Jains follow 24 tirthankaras, with Mahavira being the last of them. At least two of them have historical records that confirm their existence.
I think you should check the history section of the wikipedia on Jainism, they are vaguely put forward the same:

Personally, I would even take Rishabhdeva as the founder since he's the first tirthankar but not Mahavira.
