I tried "trench(es)" and "valley(s)" first.

I also tried "trench." I know it's usually meant in the man-made sense, but I always think of the Marianas Trench, which comes to mind when conjuring the Martian trenches...or canyons.

I tried a lot of things, including canals, since that's something people speculated they were. Don't know why I never got round to canyon or gorge though

My first idea was "chasm", however that came to my mind.

"Valley" wouldn't work either but then I got it with "canyon".

The english language seems to have way to many words for this and as a non-native english speaker it's sometimes difficult to see the subtle - or sometimes even not-so-subtle - distinctions between them.

Sometimes it pays to be old enough to have seen the space programs from 1957 to present and witnessed all the achievements.

I like the length of Martian days better than Earth days. My natural sleep schedule on Earth seems to be on a roughly 25 hour cycle which causes problems.

"C2O" is an extremely rare, extremely reactive molecule that would be a solid, not a gas.
