I'm a 5'4 (163 cm) woman and in any other country I'd be average or even tall but I'm from Latvia so I've always been considered really short. It's crazy how tall Latvian girls are...
5'4 is short everywhere in Europe. In South America you would be average in Guatemala you're tall lol! 5'4 is still within the petite(short) designation. In the USA and Canada you are short.
Would it be possible to list the states for which there is no data in the description, please? Since this quiz is not about population, knowledge of which states the caveat covers shouldn't be expected.
What's really fun is going to a place where the average height is far lower, and realizing that literally everything is built for people a full 30 cm shorter than you. GUATEMALA I AM LOOKING AT YOU.
There is no data anywhere(after a very quick google search) for the average height in South Sudan so I did a bit of research about the Dinka tribe. According to one source their average height is 182.6cm which would indeed put them top of the list. However, we are only talking about one tribe within South Sudan. According to another source, the Dinka tribe make up for 36% of South Sudan's population and most of the rest of the population are all different types of Nilotic tribes(which the Dinka tribe are as well). Given that the Nilotic tribes are all fairly closely related it is safe to assume that the other tribes in South Sudan are probably quite tall as well. So, assuming the sources I used are correct, I am inclined to agree with you.
It is a quite well known 'fact' that the Netherlands has the tallest people, but keep in mind though this research can have extremely different methodologies in how they extract their data. Which results in comparing apples to oranges.
When I compare my own country to for example Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Serbia, Norway, Denmark or Austria, I really don't think we're (Dutch) taller on average. In fact I have the impression we're even shorter. But differences are very small between basically every european country, so it's hard to tell.
Taking a look at wikipedia, the fact we often turn out to be the tallest could be because the Netherlands relies on self-reported data, while in many other countries they measured some sample group
You can read the methodology of the source... Having visited the Netherlands, I can say I'm not surprised that they top the list. People there are quite tall.
My 6' tall mother told me I would feel 'normal' when I went to Holland and saw all the tall people around me. And it was true! I'm 6'7" and Dutch American, so I didn't stand out in a crowd. Such a cool feeling! I even got tourists coming up to me and asking if I spoke English so they could ask me directions. I did feel a bit embarrassed when the locals spoke to me in Dutch and I couldn't tell what they were saying. If you're really tall and want to see what it feels like to blend in, the quizmaster has given you a travel bucket list!
You sure told him. How dare Americans know what ethnicity they are. After all, as the quiz above shows, there are no differences between say Dutch and Portuguese.
Got them all except Australia. Which is where I live. I'm a little over 6' tall and I'd consider just by observation that I'm much taller than the average for a male here, so I didn't even think to try Australia. Probably should have paid more attention to the "born in 1996" note.
There are certain tribes in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia that are very tall but it's a very mixed bag within the borders of the whole country. Others are tiny.
We watched the Serbian football team play when the FIFA World Cup U-20 was held in New Zealand on 2015. The Serbians were massively tall. Their defence was like a block wall. The goalkeeper filled up the goal. They beat Brazil in the final.
I wonder if the average age of the population would make a difference. We lose height as we age, so perhaps countries with younger average populations would rank higher than those with more older people. All I can say is, enjoy it while you have it. I was 5' 6" all my adult life until the past few years when I started losing height. I'm now 5' 4 1/2". Osteoporosis, loss of collagen, thinning of vertebral discs - all can affect height as we age.
Aging is a horrible degenerative condition that I've already endured more of than I would care to and am definitely not looking forward to going through more of in the future; at the same time I wouldn't mind losing a few inches in height. My current stature is excessive. Well above any of these national averages.
Height varies within the Netherlands. I'm 183 cm or 6' 0 or average for the Netherlands,. However, when I visit my Dutch relatives, I am the shortest male and most women are near my height. My relatives are all Frisian -- from the province of Friesland. The people in the northern provinces of Friesland and Groningen are much taller than those in the south provinces of Limburg and Brabant.
I heard somewhere that Viking loosely translated to 'Tall Invader' in some dialects...so the reference to tall people from northern Europe goes back some 1000 years
As a slightly above average height Belgian (Flemish), I already noticed that our men are much taller in comparison to the women which the data confirms (for male: 2nd in the world). I also wonder what would happen if we measure Flanders and Flemish people on their own since I've always observed us to be taller than the Walloons in the south (maybe because of their French genes?) and the males to be more similar to the Dutch in terms of height. I have always been one of the shortest people in my friend groups so that has convinced me we are pretty tall.
I'm 6'2", an Australian of Dutch ancestry (all my grandparents are Dutch), and am the shortest of all my cousins. I never even eclipsed my dad in height, who is 6'5".
I love my height. Wouldn't want to be taller or shorter. Also if you are a Dutch man it must be really hard to adapt if you move to a warmer climate country where people are shorter and everything is made for shorter people. I saw this with a Dutch man in Panama. He was 6'6. Or even a Dutch woman if you are over 5'7.
My sister's friend's dad is from the Netherlands. Can confirm, the whole family is enormous. They have to stockpile shoes when they visit the Netherlands because regular stores don't carry shoes large enough for them to wear
Funny how the best countries in basketball since a long time are not there: United States and Spain. Actually, if you see the list of the tallest countries, all of them are actually horrible at basketball except Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Lithuania, and lately Australia.
It is a quiz about the tallest people. If it were a quiz about the shortest people, there would not be a single European country on the quiz. If you like, make a quiz about the shortest countries.
OMG You truly need to creat the Quiz "Top 20 Countries With the Tallest People with exceptions" and not feature one european country on the list. I knew nordics were much taller than avarage but I didnt expect only having one country out of Europe in this list.
This may be news to you but His Eminence is not the only permanent resident of the Vatican, so even if he were 3 metres tall, the pontifical state would still be unlikely to make the tallest average list. As a guide I would like to recall that Mr Putin's 1,74 m is just as unlikely to put Russia on the list. Hope this helps.
I'm surprised Europe made almost all of this list. Technically all if we consider over half of Australians are European descendants. I expected Nordics, Benelux and Germany and only couple more from Europe, the rest Black/African countries.
I’ve just come back from the Balkans and have never seen so many enormous people in my life! They are giants! I’ve travelled in Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands and never been particularly struck by the height of the people there (being tall myself), but felt positively diminutive in Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro, and I’m used to height (my son being 6’4).
Talking about tall people without Serbia and Montenegro is ridiculous, and the data may be inaccurate as it dwarfs the 2 countries that are traditionally considered tall.
Where are you actually getting this information? I checked the link you listed as a source, and none of those data sets seem to substantiate your data. For instance, the only data for the Netherlands that would suggest males were around 182.5 cm are the 2018 and 2019 data for 17-year-olds, born around 2000-2002.
Another full marks for me! Yay! It was actually quite straight forward: type in all the Nordic/Baltic/Scandinavian countries, most Anglo-Saxon ones, and from the Baltics (there is a reason why the former Yugoslav stats are good at basketball). Avoid typing their Southern European counterparts (the nations of the Med are notoriously short, on average genetically anyway). Only Australia kept me guessing...
I think people are getting shorter, even considering immigration. It seems that for a long time all countries in Europe(and the US) were increasing their average heights , now it is levelling off. Except for the Netherlands of course. I have No idea what's going on there, Must be something in the food.
In the USA there is much variation by state as much as by country. I am considered short side of average in my area at 68 inches, (5'8") as a male. I live in the tallest state, Minnesota, average male is 70.1", we were known to have the tallest family near Cloquet (near Duluth), and for awhile the tallest man lived in Rochester in the country. There is maybe something to living in a more northern area, also we are known for our health, dairy production, so there is also likely something to that.
When I compare my own country to for example Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Serbia, Norway, Denmark or Austria, I really don't think we're (Dutch) taller on average. In fact I have the impression we're even shorter. But differences are very small between basically every european country, so it's hard to tell.

I am 175cm and considered small here in the Netherlands. When I lived in Northern Ireland I felt relatively tall, which was nice for a change!
Make me LOL
