They aren't french (Im' though). You can't give it a nationality. It is really complex. It has been created by an italian, in Alsace, when it was under German Empire. So, created in Germany by an italian. But then it became french again. Then german. Then french. Then german car companies bought it again. And now it is croat... so administratively, they are croat.

Worth noting that Ettore Bugatti was an Italian. He founded the company in 1909 and didn't have French citizenship until the very end of his life, in 1946 (the year before he died). Moreover, he founded the company in Germany! But it was in the Alsace region, which is now French territory, where it remains to this day. But the French claim to Bugatti isn't as strong as this quiz might suggest.
