When the aztecs were driven out of south mexico looking for a new place to found tenochtitlan, their gods told them to settle where an eagle caught a serpent...today that place is mexico city.

They actually arrived from the north, from the probably mythical city of Aztlan (or from the mythical seven caves, we aren't sure if the caves are a feature of Aztlan, or a place they stayed at before leaving the area). And there isn't really any accepted historical reason as to why they left, but their religious explanation is that they offended Huitzilopochtli by cutting down a tree and they were told they had to leave. So they went south and arrived at Lake Texcoco. They only saw the eagle vision when they were kicked out of Colhuacan after they killed the princess of that city-state and wore her skin or something which offended the king

I totally agree, except for the face palm bit. I've never looked that closely. As far as I've always been concerned the Mexican flag is the Italian one with the stuff in the middle! I know better now.

It's a great series, but for some reason I'm terrible at all these flag quizzes. I think having these closeups will help me more in the future, though. This must have been difficult to do. Thanks for the work you put into it.

These quizes are so cool! Seeing the flags so close is great and can be very confusing, especially the Vatican as I swear I've seen an Austria-Hungary type flag which used the same crossed keys thingy and the usual way I identify the Vatican is through the colours of the flag, i got it when i saw the crosses though.

Whaddaya know, I might be becoming a flag person... got em all in one go, just thought cameroon before trying ghana.

Only started looking at the flags yesterday, I dont think I would ve been able to accurately identify more than 8... If I got some leeway and got 3 attempts per flag maybe i would reach 15.

(let me think... canada, usa, uk, ireland &italy (but probaly guess right), netherlands, france, luxembourg, belgium& germany, (probably guess right). Sweden. OW and greece, argentina and israel . Ow and mix up spain an portugal.

The other scandinavian countries in one lump. the swiss one if I didnt say austria. and probably china, though I might say russia first. still had the soviet flag in my head...)

perhaps jamaica.

Hmm it looks like I would ve know atleast 15 instead of 8. Anyway, as you can see, not a flagperson at all haha.

For the Australian one, I kept guessing Samoa, and I got confused until I realized that the Australian flag has the white stars as well.

New Zealand flag is different. Their flag has star with five points, red color and its southern cross has only four stars.

Different design of stars. Does no one look at pictures of the flags they mention before commenting? Samoa's flag used five-point stars, Australia's doesn't!
