Heaven forfend! How can you even BEGIN to compare Indonesia's flag to Poland's? Poland's obviously incorporates so much more visual interest, historical context, and artistic skill, while capturing the essence of all her people, their long political trials and humanitarian struggles, and their importance on the modern world stage. Seriously – Indonesia just looks like they slapped theirs together in like five minutes!
be as it may, the quiz is in English so I would think the English spelling/name would be the deciding factor. In English, it's not called the "Coast of Ivory", it's "Ivory Coast". That being said, I agree that it should not be on there.
I'm getting a little over this. The country, in English, is OFFICIALLY known as 'the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire'. Even in English, 'Ivory Coast' is only used by the elderly who know no better (probably still say Burma and Siam) and those who choose stubbornness over education.
Lots of countries have official names that they want other countries to use. For example, the UN refers to Bolivia as "The Plurinational State of Bolivia". Brunei is "Brunei Darussalam" and Laos is "Lao People’s Democratic Republic". It's honestly a bit silly. You really wouldn't like it if we consistently applied the official names. So instead we consistently apply the colloquial names.
I didn't change Swaziland right away. But in the end, Swaziland didn't have a lot of sticking power and most people were using Eswatini so I changed it. Not the case for Ivory Coast. In any case, these objections are a little annoying. It's impossible to create a consistent naming system that will satisfy everyone.
Really... it is côte d'ivoir in english, ivory coast is just the translation. You dont call costa rica rich coast do you..? It really should not be on this quiz. I get that you cant please everyone and someone is always gonna complain. But for that reason you might as wel do it the right way. (As for using the argument, people never use this name but they did with other countries.. i totally disagree, only on this site I ve seen some people prefering ivory coast so saying cote d'ivoire is not commonly in use is silly.
I mean we're not asking you to call if "The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire" we're just saying that they have officially requested to be called Cote d'Ivoire in ALL languages. not based off of the translations.
Because FSM doesn't actually have a short name. The only name for FSM is Federated States of Micronesia, not Micronesia. Micronesia is an area of the Pacific that includes FSM, Marshall Islands and Palau.
Fun fact: the Ivory Coast was so named because it was colonized entirely by Irish people, whose bright, opalesque skin so contrasted with those of the people in neighboring countries that the region came to be known as the Nid d'Irlandais or Plage Laiteuse, and then later Côte d'Ivoire.
K: this isn't trolling, nor is anything I've said about Serbia, which is of course why you're accusing me of being a troll without knowing what that means. But good work trying to kill the joke everyone else was enjoying. Besides, if I'm wrong, how can you explain why the flags look so similar?
Aw, let people have extra time. It's not like there's an advantage like 'guessing all the countries that start with I'. Some folks are taking the quiz on their mobile, or aren't fast typists. I'm a very fast typist taking the quiz on my laptop and it doesn't detract from my enjoyment in the slightest that I didn't need all the time.
I used to work next to a row of flags of all countries, in alphabetical order. I always liked to see the flags of Israel and Iran peacefully next to each other.
True, but not in the Netherlands, where I live. Iraq and Ireland are written as 'Irak' and 'Ierland', so the sequence was Ierland-(...)-Irak-Iran-Israel.
perhaps make a gray box with ivory coast in it? I saw the explanation for why ivory coast doesn't work, but it confused me until I read it and I thought it would be helpful to insert the gray box
It's not a french-language website (unless you're on french obviously), but that doesn't change the fact that its name in English is Côte d'Ivoire, not Ivory Coast as it used to be.
It doesn't change anything, but your fact isn't a fact. Cote d'Ivoire is not English. Germany could pass legislation tomorrow stating that the official name of the country in all languages is Deutschland.... and the English name for the country would still be Germany. Countries have no jurisdiction over foreign languages, sorry. This is every bit as obnoxious (and clearly wrong) as if I were to go to the French language version of the countries of the world quiz and say "the name of the country in French is The United States! Not Etats-Unis! Get it right!"
I don't really consider it as Ivory Coast because on most places in jetpunk, it is mainly referred to as Cote D'ivoire. Took me a while but I got them all
Tradition isn't always correct: The gov. of Cote d'Ivoire has requested formally to be referred to as Côte d'Ivoire in all languages, regardless of translations.
I can understand the naming arguments for/against inclusion of Ivory coast (although a bit tiresome to see people repeat the same thing others have said as though nobody had ever remarked on the subject - there is a like button). What I don't understand is why it would prevent you from answering the question. You see a flag and say what country it's from and the country begins with I - if you know the answer, what's the problem unless you've never heard of the alternative /former name? Seems odd for geography quizzers who know their flags. It's not a 'name all countries beginning with I quiz'. Similarly, if it's omitted, how does it hinder you doing the quiz? Just name the ones you see!

It's like putting the Mona Lisa as Italy's flag.
If I'm speaking French I'll say Cote d'Ivoire
If I'm speaking English I'll say Ivory Coast
If I'm speaking German I'll say Elfenbeinküste
remarkably, different languages have different names for things, and there's nothing wrong with that.
it would be Cote D'Ivoire
:D
but its a neat quiz
nice quiz though
