I knew Mumbai because of Midnight's Children. But I think today they drained and built over much of water between the former islands. Btw strictly speaking, shouldn't Mexico City also be a possibility? It's historic center, the former Tenochtitlan, was an island city similar to Venice.
Looking at Google satellite imagery, Salsette is still separated from the mainland by the Vasai and Thane Creeks, so Mumbai is definitely still on an island. Can't say the same about Mexico City though; Tenochtitlan *was* and island city, but none of the ruins are located on islands today. It would be a really weird choice for this quiz.
I think I misunderstood the caveat. The historic center must not only have been on an island at the time of the city's founding but still has to be on one today. That's definitely not true for Mexico City but, apparently, still for Mumbai.
Having lived in Mumbai for a short 31 years of my life, I can guarantee it's still an island.
It used to be 7 islands - landfilled into 1 but we're still separated from mainland India. There are 6 major bridges and 3 major rail bridges that connect us to the mainland.
Wikipedia says "the Qing dynasty ceded Hong Kong Island in 1841–1842 as a consequence of losing the First Opium War. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860" implying originally the city center was just on the island.
Same mistake here, I was thinking of "little picture" islands, (like those that contain the historic centers of NYC and Stockholm) even though several of the other answers were "big picture" islands (i.e. cities like Tokyo, in island nations)
Generally canals aren't counted when determining what is an island. Otherwise most of Europe and Eastern North America would be considering archipelagos.

Anyway, I'd nominate if this wasn't a QM quiz.
And interesting the difference in result between copenhagen and stockholm!
my dumb british brain for thinking of great britain as the "mainland" has betrayed me.
GREAT quiz though - really enjoyed it!
