Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, is send to destroy a band of space pirates who stolen a Galactic Federation-owned space research vessel with samples of Metroid, a dangerous parasitic lifeform.

After stopping the threat on the planet Zebes, Samus Aran is asked to eliminate the entire remaining Metroid population of the planet SR388.

Samus Aran returns to the brooding planet Zebes to recover the last metroid from the Space Pirates.

After the Metroids were considered to be wiped out, the deadlier X parasites attack Samus. She is given a new suit after her near-death experience and returns to an empty Galactic Federation station, where something seems out of place.

The story and structure are similar to the original sequel, but the game features improved controls, enhanced visuals and introduces gameplay features and abilities new to 2D Metroid games, such as a melee counterattack and the ability to fire freely at any angle.
