And Lebanon (10,452 km²) too, but with Cyprus it won't fit the list. The quiz could also do with a bit less time, now there's plenty of time to type in random countries.
ContronThePanda: Yes! I keep telling my friends that Turkey borders the North Atlantic, since it's part of NATO. With this Cyprus/EU argument to back me up, I'm sure they'll listen!
It is in Europe, uses euro, is in the E.U, and just because it is close to Asian countries doesnt mean its in Asia. Its also in the Medditeranian ocean( i dont know how to spell it).
What makes Israel culturally European? Its entire existence is predicated on safeguarding its own Jewish culture- an ancient Middle Eastern one- that pre-dates most European civilisation. It's also not exactly a bastion of liberalism or secular governance. Plus, and I hate to state the obvious, it is quite literally part of the Asian landmass, so unlike Cyrpus there's not much of a geographic debate.
"Pre-dates most European civilisation". Are you going with the old civilization-barbarism dichotomy? Cause otherwise, in the modern sense of the word "civilization", that statement is incorrect. As a cornish person, you should know: one of those civilizations was you celtic ancestors'.
its funny that people say cyprus is in europe, but our conversation is about geography. Hence, cyprus is GEOGRAPHICALLY located in asia, no matter what the culture is, or whether its in the eu.
I bet Israel should also be considered European according to your theory I guess? (Mostly) European culture (their primary culture is European Jewish - they discriminate Arabic and African jews) and part of Eurovision. Also why don't we make Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morrocco Asian/Middle Eastern then? They are culturally Arabic. That culture argument basically makes no sense at all don't bring it here plz
With this argument, you could argue that Georgia and Armenia are also in Europe, as they are both culturally very European. And Georgia is actually partially in Europe. Yet, you see very few people arguing these two in Europe.
@Nerd0921 Cyprus is only debated because of its state as an island; countries part of mainland Afroeurasia are not contested (with the possible exceptions of Russia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey), so the Israel point is irrelevant. If you want to bring up such a debate then bring up how most of Indonesia should be considered Oceania, and how Iceland is closer to North America (Greenland) than to Europe.
You've got it wrong; the main argument that Cyprus is in Europe is because it's culturally linked to the continent. @Nerd0921 was disputing this point with the Israel example.
For some reason I can't quite fathom... JetPunk quizzes decide to incorporate Cyprus into Asia and not Europe, when Trinidad and Tobago is much closer to South America (than Cyprus is to another Asian country) but is still clearly viewed as North America (which I do agree with), as otherwise it would appear as South America's smallest country in this quiz. At least have some consistency...
When I look at a world map, I see even the whole of turkey and the Caucasus in Europe (and also Cyprus). So no matter if it is owned by Turkey or Greece or independent or whatever, I see it as European.
If you google "Trinidad and Tobago continent" you get South America, and if you google "South America countries" Trinidad and Tobago is listed. Physically, it is located on the South America continental shelf as opposed to being part of the (Lesser) Antilles chain, which distinguishes it from the rest of the Caribbean islands which are considered to be part of North America. I will, however, note that JetPunk appears to classify it as North America, as can be observed in The Countries of the World Quiz.
Ah yes, because the first Google result is always reliable and always exactly your intended question! No possible discrepancies! On a separate note, my favorite Pokémon type is Salame-
Trinidad is South America, where Tobago is in North America. Similarly Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are all South American islands. The convention is to lump all islands into North America, but that doesn't make it right.
Considering how on JetPunk we tend to use Wikipedia as a source and consistently state that where the largest and/or most important part of the country is located is determining the continent (Turkey - Asia, Egypt - Africa, but Russia / Europe). As Trinidad is the most important part it's an easy case to make to classify the country as South American.
It's probably one of those things that depends on who you ask and how you ask it. Status quo on this site and others like it is that it's part of North America. Other ways to frame it are geologically, politically, culturally, economically, etc. and each way probably has a nuanced answer. I could see CP Grey making a video on it like he did with "Holland vs the Netherlands" (https://youtu.be/eE_IUPInEuc) that includes Sint Maarten but not Saint Martin which occupy the same island.
Honk: I completely agree. Just as Trinidad and the ABC islands are geographically in South America, and culturally part of the Caribbean. (Though the food is really more similar to the South American cuisine).
Well if u consider Russia as European then that would be Paraguay vs Sweden and you'd be wrong as Sweden is bigger...but if u don't consider Russia then it would be Paraguay vs Germany and you'd be right :)
Has anyone done a version of this quiz that includes only countries on the continental mainland? (I realize that excludes all Oceania countries except Australia.)
Seems that it would be interesting to see the five smallest continental African countries for instance, rather than just remember the island countries included in Africa that aren't Madagascar.
South America would (of course) change the least. But all the others would be totally different, except for Europe, which would only have one change.
I wish that political considerations could be omitted from a quiz on Geography! - - Politics can shift on a daily basis; geography, save earthquakes and meteors, rarely does.
but it's not? It's in the EU, the European Union, they use the Euro, a currency used in EUROPE, it doesn't make sense for them to be in Asia. And if you go by the logic that it is geographically in Asia, then Malta should be African.
30/30! The quiz was quite easy, I just found it hard to know what to look for. It took me a while to get Africa because I kept guessing countries like the Gambia, Djibouti, Burundi, Rwanda, etc, and then I realized that all of the answers were in its islands.
For Asia's 5th smallest country I couldn't think straight. Qatar? East Timor? Kuwait? Taiwan? Lebanon? I eventually got so desperate I tried Armenia. Luckily, I thought of Cyprus at some point
Fun fact: the smallest country in South America- Suriname, is many times bigger than all 25 countries outside of South America featured in this quiz combined!
According to google Malta is 2 times bigger than Lichtenstein. Malta is 316 sqkm while Lichtestein is 160 sqkm. So i think that Malta shouldn't be on this quiz.
Simply put: There is no right or wrong in the Cyprus debate.
1, vatican

get over it- asia's big enough! :)
cyprus is a member of the eu for crying out loud... and greeks live there
oh, and some turks attempted to settle it
but it basically flopped
Nice quiz.
Interesting new fact :)
