Both New York and Los Angeles are being considered by the Metropolitian population, if we were to do that then why wouldn't Germany be on the list. On wikipedia its lists Rhine-Ruhr as over 10 million.

Very surprised not to see Vietnam on there considering the large national population but I guess they are spread out over a few big cities

It's similar across Southeast Asia - big national populations, but mostly relatively small cities. With a quarter of a billion people, Indonesia should at least have a second. The difference in population between Bangkok and Thailand's next largest city is phenomenal. In general Southeast Asian populations seem to be more widely spread than in other parts of Asia.

Not sure what you're talking about. Bangkok, Manila, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Saigon, Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Yangon... all huge. Indonesia is a big country.

There was a reason I said "relatively small". Indonesia has more than twice the population of Japan, but whereas Japan has three megacities, Indonesia has just Jakarta. Also, when I say Southeast Asia, I'm not including Hong Kong, Shenzhen, or Guangzhou as I generally consider all of China to belong to Northeast Asia. There's an argument that some Chinese cities are Southeast Asian, but I think it's generally simpler to use whole countries when defining these regions.

I wouldn't call Germany spread out. It is a very dense country, with a huge population for its size. The real reason why it isn't on here is that they don't have one big city that's much more important than the others, like London for the UK or Paris for France. Instead, they have five or six urban areas that are about the same size: Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and the Ruhr (the latter two being sometimes counted together). They're big, but they have less than 10 million people.

I‘d say Germany has one. There is not a definition of a „maximum stretch“ a megacity can reach. The biggest urban area(s) is/are Cologne-Düsseldorf-Rhine-Ruhr, which would have ≈11 million inhabitants. The stretch is about 80km, so not that much larger than like Mumbai or Moscow.
