For those who are wondering how Venezuela is still on the list keep in mind that it takes a long time for life expectancy to fall in the event of economic collapse. Education takes even longer to fall, since all the people with degrees still have them even if they can't get a job. Finally, Venezuela has a decent amount of oil income still. HDI doesn't measure how well that income actually reaches the people.
I'm pretty sure USA has the highest GDP in the world, followed by a long list of other countries before Qatar. GDP per capita however is a different story....
Well San Marino and Monaco should really not be on the list. In 2009 (year of their source), both had an HDI comparable to Singapore. This means both are most likely now at about 0.93 and thus AT MOST number 6 and 7 in Europe....
they are first in north america, but yea behind europe and australia and singapore.
Still you dont always have to be first to say well done. 8th in a list of approx 197 is well done. "winning" isnt everything, only for people that like to brag. Doing well is what matters (I am talking with things in general not just about the quiz subject)? For instance on a climb of mount everest I wouldnt call the ones that didnt come first losers, it is still and achievement. Sometimes people are so focussed on that first place like it is all or nothing. Ok I'll stop ranting, or next I'll be on about the environment or something ;) (where the attitude often is, when you can 100% fix something ( but maybe 90%) why bother even trying)
I was like: "I did the whole of South-America, how didn't I find it?".. I had already said for myself that Venezuela was no use trying and it'd be ridiculous even putting it in. I already thought I was stupid when I put in Bolivia as a desperate answer. How wrong I was.
Nah, not really. All countries in the top 5 are isolated from the center of Africa, so there's definitely an easily noticeable pattern. North Africa, Southern Africa, African Islands.
Definitely not pot luck. I made 10 guesses and got the 5, it’s fairly intuitive. Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Rwanda and Egypt were the only other ones that felt in contention.
It was down to 0:08 seconds and I had 28/30 and the only two that were missing were the last 2 North American countries. I knew they had to be Caribbean even though I hadn't tried all the Central American countries because Costa Rica hadn't gone through. I knew Bahamas would be there so I tried that first. But had no clue after that. It was SHEER LUCK that I guessed Barbados 2nd of all the tiny Caribbean countries, with 0:02 left. So a pretty lucky 30/30 all in all.
Real race against the timer here, I struggled with the last N. American country for quite a while, and only made it 30/30 in the last few seconds with Botswana.
Is it just a coincidence that Africa's 2 highest HDI countries are island nations? Does isolation from mainland Africa, or just the mainland of a continent in general, have any impact on life expectancy, education, and income? You see the same trend with some island countries, like Iceland, Singapore, Japan, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago (obviously Oceanian countries).
Or has this been updated since your comment?

A passing interest in current African affairs will help you pick out the success stories and avoid the horror stories.
I'm so embarrassed
Despite all the hardships, making the unbelievable.
