MADAGASCAR and Niger?

I guess most people get niger when they type nigeria

And probably miss Nigeria... thinking they got it. Poor souls.

I'm sure Nigeria would be #6 on the list.

madagascar is the most obvious one to me. Then a tie between egypt and south africa. next would be morocco and dont know what I would ve choosen as 5th. But for the quiz I indeed guessed niger cause that seemed statistically probably (twice the chance because of nigeria and I think people (with a limitied amount of knowledge about africa) would type nigeria before congo, which obviously also has double the chance). Anyway no guesses needed.

I DID need em for asia.... I reallly couldnt think of what could be above japan... Other had no misses either, besides trying samoa on oceania (after having micronesia fiji and new guinea, but didnt think of new zealand and australia yet)

A bit confusing as I thought there are only 3 countries in north America. I assume the central Americans were lumped in with the north.
+15
Level 63
May 24, 2017
Central America is part of North America, as are all the nations in the Caribbean. "Central America" is not a continent.
+2
Level 67
Jun 6, 2019
it is not indeed, but I think we also used to learn at school north south and central america separately (though I dont believe we were ever told central america was its own continent).

I think that "Fidji" should be correct too.

You think that, it's not actually true.
+10
Level 44

I think that "Fidshi" should be correct too or "Phidhshi". And while they're at it they should also add "Fish" and "Fiiijdshijjyyiishdjy".
+4
Level 65
May 10, 2021
They should also add Fi-Wi, fihefurydhfjehsdyukji, FIjI, 800-588-2300FIJITODAY, IJIF, Fine Jill, Fiddles jiggle, Fyjy, and any other word that somehow represents Fiji.

I was about to correct you and say that it is spelled "Columbia" only to google it and find out that the opposite is true! Columbia is the incorrect but widely used spelling of the South American country in the United States. Who knew?
+1
Level 46
May 24, 2017
I've never heard that. "Columbia" was the general term used in the U.S. for the new lands opened up to European settlement by Columbus's voyage. So, for example, the song "Hail, Columbia" was a very popular U.S. patriotic song, and kind of an unofficial anthem for the country for over a hundred years.

Colombia has always been Colombia.

+7
Level 67
Jun 6, 2019
qcumber, the name of the country is definitely colOmbia anything else is just people spelling it wrong. There are places in the US that áre called columbia which might confuse some people. But that does not change the correct name or spelling of the country colombia.

@ala02 if they use colombia they are mistaken, because in american english it is still colombia, no country by the name of columbia exists.

It could be the difference of 1% and the latter two would have failed to make the quiz.

not gonna explain the niger nigeria thing... that is too obvious. But yea Iran Iraq is something you would suspect, but maybe it got 81%
+2
Level 45
Aug 3, 2019
Surely because of foreign languages? For example in french, we say "Iran" too but "Irak" instead of "Iraq". It could explain the % difference.
+1
Level 67

Interesting point, it might be part of it, I think for most languages Iran remains Iran and Iraq is about 50/50 spelled Iraq or Irak. (With latin alphabet as script).

I'm really surprised that Germany isn't on the list for Europe's best known countries...
+1
Level 77
Jun 1, 2020
I think it may be at number 6. Russia is obvious because of its size and status as world power, and numbers 2-5 because of their tourism value. What surprises me though is that the two most popular European tourist destinations come last on this list. I'd have expected Italy to be much lower.

Level 62

Mar 17, 2020
Niger is counted, but not Nigeria? I'm surprised.
+3
Level 56
May 3, 2020
Not super surprising. Niger is at the end. People probably wanted to type in "Nigeria" and "Niger" came up first, then they typed in "Nigeria" again, which probably made it 6th on the list.
