however, my strategy was that I thought that solomon islands had a lot of land for an oceanic country. Then about 20 seconds later, I'm like, oh crap its Fiji
I didn't guess Russia because I got all of the Asian countries. Russia! you fickle red fish! You switch between Europe and Asia as it suits your own needs.
Actually, we've counted the Russian split of the Ural Mountains to divide Russia and form a marking of population between the continental sides. Since China is outrageously over-populated, beside many other Asian countries, as opposed to Europe, the country would be included on the top row, second-to-right, and not the bottom westernmost section of the quiz. Surprisingly, Bangladesh is more populated than Russia!
Got them all with over a minute to spare. The only hard part was Oceania. I got the first 3 pretty quick and after that it was just a matter of typing in all of the countries until I got the last two. Thankfully there aren't too many countries in Oceania.
Cuba has more people than Haiti. Cuba has 11.48 million people, Haiti has 10.98. Given that Haiti's growth has been steady, whereas Cuba's is relatively flat, this fact would have also been true at the time the test was created.
I suggest changing NA's rankings to put Cuba last, not Haiti.
Looks like you're right. Wikipedia used to say that Haiti was more populated. I have a feeling that Haiti's government statistics are non-existent or incomplete, so there's probably a large range of estimates.
Worldometer (like the others) shows no blip in the population for Haiti in 2010, even though 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians were supposed to have died in the earthquake that year.
I would agree there should be a blip, but not as big as you might think. The best estimate for the death toll is that 92,000 died. Worldometers is based on UN data and estimates, so maybe e-mail your UN ambassador? :)
Look at http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/haiti-population/ where there's not only a population graph but a population growth rate graph. 92000 is 0.8% of 11 million. The graph show a growth rate of about 1.6% in 2009, which means the graph should nosedive to about half that in 2010, but nothing like that is shown. Either someone's lying about the effects of the earthquake or someone is incompetent at processing data.
growth rate is not really effected if people die. If say per 5 families 10 kids are born, that would still be the same even after a disaster (unless access to food etc was impacted or like nuclear disaster which could cause miscarriages). There might might some slight impacts, but those could go both ways
Your source is out of date and draws from the same UN estimates that our source does. That said, population numbers for Haiti (and probably Cuba too) have a significant margin of error.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I think the portion of the US population that lives in Hawaii should be considered as part of Oceania on quizzes like this. It seems to me that would be more consistent with how other transcontinental states (e.g. Russia and Turkey) are handled, as well as being in line with the caveat in this quiz. I gather that it's not the standard practice on Jetpunk, but I've never really been clear on why that is.
What with the world being such a complicated place, and what with us being such a complicated species, there will never be a consistent and satisfying way of arranging it all.

There are no rules, only choices.
