What does Liechtenstein export? I thought the entire country was one big bank/tax haven.

Machinery, tools and that sort of thing.

His Serene Highness Prince Hans Adam II, is Liechtenstein’s current ruler. He’s Europe’s richest monarch, worth about $5 billion. The National Anthem has the same tune as 'God Save the Queen' of UK. Population >36,000. There are more Registered Companies than people. The largest industrial companies in Liechtenstein are Hilti (construction services), Balzers (electro-optical coatings), Hilcona (frozen foods), and Ivoclar-Vivadent (dental medical technology).

Liechtenstein is the largest producer of fake teeth as far as I know.

Hilti (top quality machinery), Neutrik (one of the world leaders for audio-video connectors), and they might be the world leader in dental prosthesis production (or at least, the leader in high quality ones). They tend to do the same things as their Swiss neighbors, namely high quality manufacture, if not exactly cheap (due to strong CHF).

I absolutely can't believe that Brunei is not on this list: huge oil exports divided by a small population. More per capita than Ireland??

I'll second this. I thought Qatar and Brunei would be #1 and #2.

You'd think that I'd know UAE = country and Dubai = city. Still was very surprised not to find Dubai on the list and missed UAE. ARGH!

Wow - how hard is this? No obvious pattern seems to emerge. I got 6 but would never have guessed Lichtenstein - learning something every day!

I think the pattern is: rich country + relatively small population. But I must admit that Liechtenstein was a bit of a puzzle to me too, had no idea that they produce anything. Would've rather guessed Luxembourg etc.

That's the pattern. Though the Netherlands easily has the biggest population on this quiz, but I assume they have high imports and exports because of Rotterdam.

Interesting I was actually thinking during this quiz, well this one has a very apparent pattern, first time I thought that during a quiz. The all have a high population density. Apart from Ireland UAE those are the odd ones out. Especially is you disregard the (small) islands. All but the above two have a density above 200/km²

The pattern is countries with large amounts of exports and low populations.

Or rather expensive exports/relatively small population. I don't know if some of these countries export anything else than oil.

What does Ireland export except beer in sooty barrels?
+3
Level 94
Jul 17, 2018
As of July 2018 sooty barreled beer seems fairly low on the list as it doesn't make the top ten:

1.Pharmaceuticals: US$38.2 billion (28.3% of total exports)

2.Organic chemicals: $23.8 billion (17.7%)

3.Optical, technical, medical apparatus: $13.8 billion (10.2%)

4.Electrical machinery, equipment: $9 billion (6.7%)

5.Perfumes, cosmetics: $8.4 billion (6.2%)

6.Machinery including computers: $7.4 billion (5.5%)

7.Aircraft, spacecraft: $4.8 billion (3.5%)

8.Other chemical goods: $3.7 billion (2.8%)

9.Meat: $3.5 billion (2.6%)

10.Dairy, eggs, honey: $2.7 billion (2%)

Why thank you, that could've easily gone to Google.

I further thank you for not using Wikipedia. One can only assume their article on sooty beer was written and edited by 35,612 people and is unreliable.

The scope of the pharma industry in Ireland pretty remarkable. They were hit so hard in the crash and have really bounced back.

Yeah; Ireland GDP/capita is twice UK GDP/capita. Very dangerous attractivity near Northern Ireland after Brexit.

They are a tax haven so my guess is that it's not things that are actual produced in Ireland.

I put in Singapore. It didn't take it... but I got 50% credit. How does that work??

50% means you've taken the quiz more than once and got it right half of the time. If it didn't take Singapore you probably had a typo when entering.

Surprised only 2 oil & gas exporters included. Had expected to see several of Kuwait, UAE, Brunei, Trinidad & (especially) Saudi Arabia listed. On other hand, Singapore at #2 a shock, though I did guess it. Wonder if data exists to repeat for, say, 1900 &/or 1950 - big differences, surely! Also must check if Skukka has done IMPORTERS equivalent? - bet more O&G countries on that list!!

What does the Marshall Islands export? Sand?
+2
Level ∞
May 23, 2025
It probably serves as a way for countries to export to the United States in a tax-advantaged way.

Marshall Islands is a former U.S. territory which is in a pact of free association with the United States. In many ways, it is still a de-facto territory of the U.S.

It is probably used as a way to get around various rules and regulations much like Bermuda or the Cayman Islands.

+2
Level 87
May 23, 2025
Wikipedia says Marshall Island exports in 2013 were $53.7 million. The World Factbook says that in 2021 they were $130 million. Trade Map says that in 2024 it was $1.8 billion. Seems a little fishy.

Okay. That wasn't it at all. It's shipping.

Source.

Marshall Islands is the third largest Flag of Convenience, which is when countries fly the flag of a random small country to avoid regulation.

Perhaps Marshall Island imports a ship and then exports the same ship. I don't know how it works.

Also note that the numbers for Netherlands, Ireland, Singapore, and many other countries on this list are tax related as well.

According to Donald Trump's data, Heard and McDonald Islands should be on this list. Impressive that all those penguins and seals managed to export $1m of machinery to the USA in 2022.
