Some fun facts now that this quiz has been featured:
- Chicago was originally slated to host the 1904 Olympics, but the organizers of the St. Louis World's Fair threatened to create their own, better sports event unless the games were moved.
- Despite bidding for the Olympics seven times, Detroit has never hosted it. In fact, the city declined an invite to bid in 2013 due to their near-bankruptcy.
East St. Louis is in Illinois. Different city just across the border. East Chicago is also a city in Indiana, just across the Illinois border. And of course Kansas City is in Missouri, just across the border from Kansas City, Kansas. What the hell?
Despite "winning" the right to host those Olympics by threatening to create a better sports event, St. Louis treated the Olympics as a sideshow at best.
The games spanned 5 months, with the events being nothing more but an additional attraction for the World's Fair.
Furthermore, in alignment with the "human zoos" that were a staple during those times' World's Fairs, non-white people were only allowed to compete in the "Anthropology Days", a couple of days with events exclusive to them.
If that wasn't enough, the Marathon was a story in itself. I'm running out of space, so I'll drop this absolutely pretty good gem of a video, so you can watch that story.
Fun quiz! I thought about Squaw Valley for quite some time before I started. That one popped in nicely though. Thought I had to hammer in states with winters there...
Another fun fact: Denver won the bid for the 1976 Winter Olympics. However, after they had won the bid, the people of Denver had voted not to fund the Olympic games, so the city withdrew. It is the only case where a city withdrew from hosting after they had already won the bid.
I guess that also answers many people's questions about why SLC hosted it at all. Denver withdrew in the past so they chose Denvers twin. I don't think it's that weird but I live in Utah so idk.
