Great! I think this would be a very good quiz with feature quality for our French section!

Thanks! I'm most likely going to translate it (using my weak French skills!)

nice! can we have a proximity version? also, I think it would be nicer to have the 'external' islands more separated eg to the right of the map

Thanks, I can try! Originally I just had Reunion and Guadeloupe, but I realized last minute that Fort-de-France, Martinique was there, so it ended up crowded.

Cayenne is at #101 :) But the data is from 2013, so it may have to appear soon.

Hi, I'm pretty sure that Annecy should be here with around 125,000 population.

I thought that too but after checking there are only 53k people in Annecy, the rest is in the suburban towns.

Yeah, this. Annecy itself is pretty small. My favourite French city though so I tried it anyway.

Cheers! They are the reason why Paris's urban area population is so massive.

Paris proper is only 2m cause they don't count all the suburbs as other major cities do

Level 59

I would suggest also possibly making a quiz of the largest cities in France by urban area as well.
+4
Level 59
Jan 14, 2021
Also I forgot to mention that citypopulation.de just added urban agglomerations for France, so that will help you if you decide to do that.
+2
Level 70
Jan 14, 2021
Thanks for the notice. I will keep the city populations the same as their commune, as I'm not hugely fond of the urban agglomerations. I am happy to say that Wikipedia has some recent data, and that this quiz is going to be updated very soon :)

btw, I can't imagine how annoying it must've been to add the cities/maps for overseas territories :)
+2
Level 70
Jan 15, 2021
It was a little. Fortunately I was able to reuse a map I made a while ago for a French Departments quiz, and I only had to draw the territory of New Caledonia. Communes in overseas regions and territory is listed in my source, too, which simplifies things greatly :)

When I first started my Jetpunk account, I knew next to none of these. If you know 15-20 you should be proud, that is much more than anyone I've met here in Canada could name!

Great quiz. I knew going into this I'd be Bordeaux line points/no points, and this definitely brought me to my Nice. I made a real Metz of this, but hey, I'm just Amiens and I had nothing Toulouse. Next time I think I Cannes do a Lille better.

Tiny little issue, but the way the inset maps are placed, French Guiana kinda looks like it's part of Spain

I can see why you would think that, although unfortunately I don't have much room to move the maps. Maybe I will recolour some of the borders to make it more clear.

I expected Carcassonne to be on here. It is a popular tourist destination and it has its own airport.

Carcassonne, whilst looking absolutely stunning on Google Images, comes a little short population wise at around 46,000 people, making it the 142nd largest commune in France.

Looking at the images I really want to go someday! :)
