The inclusion of two Crimean cities is not endorsement of Russian annexation of Crimea. A reminder that administration is based on pre-2022 lines, as the situation is prone to change over time.

Thank you! I am in agreement with you, considering Russia currently has control/administration of Crimea (and Jetpunk maps prioritise that when handling disputed territory, I've noticed). This issue has caused a great deal of controversy on my quizzes before, and I want people to focus on enjoying the quiz rather than concerning themselves on what stance I may or may not have towards Crimea.

True words. Crimea is de facto russia now.

Claiming anything else is a political stance about how one might think it should be, however that doesn't change reality

Iraq didn't become part of the US just because the country was occupied be US troops a few years ago. It's the same for Crimea: International borders are not redrawn just because there are foreign troops in that country. That's the basics of international law.

"claiming anything else is a political stance"

Legitimizing a fascist dictatorship invading foreign lands is also a political stance, but ok

Like you said, it's de facto controlled by Russia, not de jure. Somaliland is also de facto independent from Somalia, yet it never appears on these quizzes. However, Taiwan is de facto independent and only recognised by a few small countries, yet it somehow does get treated like any other country on this website. Western Sahara gets recognised as Moroccon here even though it doesn't have control of the whole territory, so the 'de facto' argument doesn't make sense here either. And don't even get me started on Palestine lol.

None of these really have a right or wrong answer, but I've always felt like Jetpunk is very inconsistent. It doesn't follow what the UN recognises. It doesn't follow what the US recognises. And it also doesn't follow reality for everything. It just feels like these decisions are based on the owner's personal believes or something.

Actual lines of control are interesting, but get messy really quick. Libya is split in half. Yemen is split in half. Syria is split between the newly established government and Rojava. Pure de facto borders are interesting, but impractical for a quiz or for most maps.

As for recognised states, the Quizmaster is fairly consistent with what's been added. Taiwan has less and less recognition, but it still has relations with several countries. The Sahrawi (Western Saharan) control only covers a small strip in the desert, and it's administered from refugee camps in Algeria. Palestine is the only one I could see being added to Jetpunk.

Also, I've tried to recognise the dispute by using slashed lines on Crimea, and through greying out the cities. If I were to do a Ukraine quiz I would include the Crimean cities too, in grey.

Crimea is not part of Russia. Everything else is Russian propaganda.

There are clear rules in international law that define which territory is part of which country. As long as Ukraine does not cede Crimea to Russia, the peninsula is Ukrainian territory. Whoever claims otherwise attacks the rule of international law.

fantastic! how do you normally add sorrounding countries to the map? for me, I usually place dots on a high-quality map and overlay it from Google Maps and add the sorrounding countries that way, but it takes a long time!

I use one or more maps as a base and then add whatever I like, be it oblasts, or surrounding countries. This map is question was used for my quiz on the Oblasts of Russia, which I reused here as it took a few hours to make and I wasn't keen on making a new map for this quiz. I always add cities last. I use Google maps as a source to place the cities, traditionally I use map features on the same latitude and longitude to approximate coordinates, although this is tricky on projections such as the one in this quiz.

I'm assuming you typed 'Kalinin', the Stalinist-era name of the city, with the name Tver being restored in 1990. 'Tver' and 'Kalinin' are the only two type-ins possible for that answer.

Great quiz! I would like to suggest a few changes in city-names:

Kalinin - yes, it is an old name for Tver, but not popular now. You get this city automatic if you try to type "Kaliningrad" in

Nizhny - gets Nizhny Novgorod. But on this map there is also "Nizhny Tagil", maybe user has to type the full name for both of them

Thank you!

That is fair, I have removed Kalinin as a type in. I will keep the 'Nizhny' type-in for Nizhny Novgorod since it's really common on Jetpunk, and it reminds me of how some of the Mexican quizzes allow just Baja for Baja California (Lower California) even though there is a Baja California Sur.

I appreciate the suggestions :)

The inclusion of Crimean cities IS an endorsement to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as you're giving more legitimacy to their claim to the land by portraying it as theirs in this quiz.
+5
Level 71

They've been administering Crimea for over 10 years now and I don't see that changing anytime soon. This is not a quiz about which cities Russia should or shouldn't control.

Yet you present a map that has "Russian Federation" written in Russian that contains Crimean cities as "Russian". Well if you're onto administration, why not include South Ossetia and Abkhazia then? They're as Russian administrated as any other "Republic" present within Russia.
+1
Level 71

They are Russian puppets at this point, but it's not really convention to include them as part of Russia on any map I've seen. I'm a huge map nerd, I've seen tonnes of maps lol. On the other hand, Crimean cities are clearly marked as disputed in the answer box and on the slashed lines on Crimea itself. And I don't know what part of Russian Federation being written in Russian bothers you. It's a quiz about Russia after all. I use the same convention of flag + country name in its language on my other recent maps by the way.
+1
Level 68
Jan 24, 2025
Pretty much everyone on this site is a map nerd lol. I'm just saying that having a map with "Russian Federation" written that includes Crimean cities legitimizes the illegal occupation of the Kremlin Regime. I saw on your other comments that you use the de facto argument; don't be like the Quizmaster who is one of the most inconsistent mappers I've ever seen, mixing what different political entities views just because of his own opinion. And also, please don't legitimize Russian actions within Ukraine, there's already plenty of people doing just that.

Some of the decisions made on Jetpunk are Quizmaster's decisions, like Palestinian statehood or what to call Myanmar/Burma, but I remember at one point he shared the source of the maps used on Jetpunk, and he didn't really make any modifications to regional borders. He has defended the choices of the maps, but I don't believe he's changed any borders from the source files. Yes, it was an illegal annexation. No, I don't agree that it was a good thing. If there is a better way to display them as contested cities, then I will make this change, although I likely wouldn't remove them outright unless other featured quizzes did the same thing.
