This quiz is now out of date, as Jetpunk has updated their map of the world. This new map has some significant changes, and new islands have been added (including the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Faroe Islands, etc.)
I will update this quiz in future, but it may take a while to adapt, and some islands may have been cut too. If I feel like it, I may also make individual quizzes for different continents.
Also, I couldn't really do much more about this (and I cannot fault anyone who thought otherwise) but the title is meant to imply 'all islands which are on a particular world map', rather than 'all islands in the world, on a world map'.
I feel that the title suggests the later, so if I think of a better way to phrase the title then I chill change it.
Alphabetical would take at least an hour, and size order would be a multi day project. Not worth it for one quiz. If Quizmaster ever releases a feature to alphabetically order quiz answers, I will happily update the quiz, but for now this will have to do.
you can do that very quickly with Excel! just export answers, copy them to excel, sort alphabetically, and then import them. let me know if I can be of any help!
New Caledonia consists of many islands, the main one is called Grande-Terre, or Le Caillou. It is kind of like Guadeloupe, except unlike Guadeloupe there is only one main island and not two.
As the description says, this is Jetpunk's map of the world. There are no requirements whatsoever, it's just a modified version of the map from the Countries of the World Quiz and I chose not to add nor remove islands (deliberately).
A suggestion: instead of allowing 'any letter' allow 'any number' to get the unnamed ones. This way when you type an island you can know if you've already guessed it or not
Most of the land missing from the Jetpunk world map is in the arctic or antarctic, which kind of makes sense. But why is it missing Socotra, the Balearic Islands, Mauritius, Reunion, Kerguelen, etc.?
I've removed blue circles, so most small island countries are discounted. I'd guess Kergelin and Reunion aren't featured due to being territories, which is understandable. The Balearic Islands on the other hand I wish were added.
Amazing!! It's a shame the JetPunk map only has 356 islands. Great work once again, however, there's a minor error - Greenland looks a bit too far south :)
Thank you! Greenland is the same height as the original JetPunk map, however it may appear more south due to me extending the water border to the north. Loads more islands were added to the JetPunk map earlier this year, but I haven't got around to looking at what's all been added--yet.
Choose regex and type ^[a-z] it can also be used in the middle of a word if you drop the freestanding circumflex/caret, for example in the JetPunk type-in for Kyrgyzstan: ^K[IY]RG[A-Z]+STAN
I nominated this before I read the pinned comment that the Jetpunk map got updated since this quiz. Still, this is a fantastic quiz that's been hiding in front of us all along.
Thank you for the kind words! I would love to update this at some point, but it is going to take some time, and I really don't know the best way to go about the update, as I don't have a great way of knowing which islands have been added.
Why are there unnamed islands? There must be some Argentina politicians who would love to see their name on one of the islands? Or they could name them for some holy person... how do they refer to them? "Oh yeah, you know I was sailing around Tierra del Fuego and I saw a beautiful penguin on unnamed island at coordinates whatever and on that other island called... well nothing at coordinates whatever I watched a seal eat a penguin... great trip! Brill!"
You'd think that with the amount of people with absolutely nothing better to do, that everything major would be named by now. But no, there are clearly even less productive ways to do absolutely nothing. Even the world's second tallest mountain doesn't have a proper name, K2 standing for Karakoram 2, so who knows what motivating stories were generated on Chile's unamed island #3 :)
Good quiz, surely lots of effort. I worked a lot on this quiz, and here's some errors I outlined, that you could use for reference if you ever update this quiz.
- Admiralty, North Stradbroke, and Terschelling are misspelled.
- "Ghadex" is either Gozo or Ghawdex. Both should probably count.
- Sherbro's location is incorrect.
- Char Fasson is a borough, the island is Bhola
- North Salawati is a borough, the island is Salawati
- No reference to Basse-Ob or Lembien anywhere online. Lembien should probably be Pantar, which is the island in that location. No idea what Basse-Ob should be, it's unnamed on most sources.
- Malevu is a town on Naviti Island. Malevu Island is elsewhere.
- Isla Salas is a very random island in its location, and Kvaloya is a very prominent island that is missing.
- Afua seems to be referred to as Caviana in most sources.
Thank you very much for the list! Originally I got all the names from Google Maps, which is probably why some of the names are off. Kvaloya appears merged with Ringsvassoy on the map, so I can probably find a way to recognise this on the map.
I will certainly come back to this comment when I update the quiz. I cannot promise when that will be, since a lot of islands were added in Jetpunk's new (now two years old) map of the world. I will be sure to look at more maps than just Google Maps to double check, also :)
That is true, because the map merges together several islands and Hinnøya only makes up around half of the highlighted shape. Therefore I opted to give the answer for free and note that the shape on the map represents multiple islands. I had to do this a few times (unfortunately).
I really love this quiz, I have played it several times.
I'm absolutely glad to see you're going to update it as the map has changed. But I've also seen your comment saying that some islands may have been cut. :(
Is there a chance you can get a map with as many as possible? I mean there IS another quiz similar to yours on Jetpunk, with quite an overlap, but there are at least 150 islands which are different. (There is a lot of other information in that quiz, though, so even though there is an overlap, it's worth playing both.)
Thank you! Two years ago I would have said yes but unfortunately these days I am short on time :(
If somebody someday is willing to make this kind of quiz, but with the same map scambigol used, then surely that will be the perfect islands quiz.
I have faith that the quiz will happen at some point, because there are many hardworking quizmakers on Jetpunk, but the problem is that island quizzes are underrated on this site compared with city, region or even languages quizzes.

Thanks to whomever spotlighted this!
What are the requirements for making this list?
Seems like there are some larger islands then some of the one's that are included. October Revolution for one.

Could you please also accept "Funen" for "Fyn"? It's the englisch name for the island (see Wikipedia).
Only suggestion is changing the name of "Ghadex" to their
"Gozo" (English name) or "Għawdex" (Maltese name) and accepting all of these as type-ins.
Never seen it called Ghadex.
Thanks for playing :)

It would be great to have a quiz with all the islands... I guess that's an immense lot of work.

Also, maybe a more fitting title would be "All Landmasses on the JetPunk World Map" given the continental landmasses being included.
but as a Dutch person, i have to say:
it's terschelling, not tershelling
The northern unnamed island in Eastern Greenland is Shannon Island.
The unnamed island in Western Greenland is probably Qeqertaq Island.
I would say the southernmost archipelago in South America is actually a single island called Hoste Island.
The third southernmost archipelago I would also say is a single island named is probably a single island named Desolación Island.
The northernmost unnamed archipelago in South America is the Chonos Archipelago
I don't know where you got the name 'Afua' from. I would've thought it would've been Ilha Caviana.
The island to the west of "Afua" is probably multiple islands.
The islands in the Amazon delta are Ilha Grande do Gurupá, Ilha do Pará, Ilha Mexiana, and Ilha Caviana de Dentro.
Don't know where you got 'Basse-Ob' either, but it seems to be multiple islands that collectively make up the Нижне-Обский (Nizhny Obsky) sanctuary.
The island atop Krasnoyarsk Krai is Severny Island.
You also missed an island west of Guinea-Bissau, which is probably the Bissagos Archipelago.
The island in the Laptev Sea is probably Yarok Island.
Island north of Shannon Island is Store Koldewey.
Arve-prinsens seems to be an older name. English Wikipedia calls it Alluttoq Island.
Hard to tell what the island in southern Greenland is, possibly the Qaqortoq peninsula or the archipelago which surrounds it.
