I hope I didn't over-saturate the information with wartime history. Based on what I've heard, scars from the war which took place 25 years ago are still commonplace in Bosnia. Buildings have bullet holes dotting them, and bomb damage has been patched up in such a manner that you can tell what got hit and where. The country is also ridden with landmines, and it can be extremely dangerous to wander off of paths (should you get the chance to visit). That being said, Bosnia is an amazing and beautiful country, and one of the places I most want to visit when I have the chance.
They are widespread, here is a map based on the situation in 2008. They have been working to clear the mines but this is a problem that will continue for decades, at least.
Used to live in southern bosnia and can attest to that landmines are still everywhere. First day in school (moved there when I was 16) we were given a lesson in how to avoid landmines (essentially don't walk where there aren't roads) since they haven't been able to locate them all yet.
Thank you for the insight, I heard too that stepping off of demarkated trails can be a death sentence. It is really important to know these things, especially for someone like me who is curious and might want to explore a little more.
