I really should have lowered the maple leaf to make the city Winnipeg, in hindsight. At least if you miss it you'll still get the Canadian flag at the end--kind of.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! It is surprisingly difficult to choose suitable countries. I am around 40-50% done the third entry, and I am beginning to think it will have to focus on European countries (most countries just don't have their cities in the right place, or perhaps their flag is too complex).
I was desperately trying different spellings of Fort McMurray before realising Saskatchewan wasn't Alberta, and ended up missing that, like almost everyone else. 5 stars and nominated :)
Thank you, I do what I can to feature the wonderful city of Thompson here on Jetpunk :) (if only Churchill was bigger, I think some people would actually recognise Churchill, MB)
I tried Churchill but thanks to your comment I got Thompson before I ran out of time. Unfortunately missed Stavanger and Galway. I'm loving this series, the visual appeal of the flags in the map with the subdivisions (which is rare) is so pleasuring and fascinating. Hope to see more (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
Thanks for playing! Besides visual appeal, I believe subdivisions are necessary so quiz-takers can get an idea of where the colours trace over. I am midway through the third instalment, but it is going slow as I have less free time nowadays, and I'm getting to a point where I don't have pre-created subdivisions and must draw each one seperately before adding them to the greater map. Im also struggling to include non-European countries at this point. It is on the way, however!
Yes however Greater Liverpool's borders extend over the River Mersey and onto the white section, creating a strange scenario. Glad you enjoyed the quiz mate.
I've lived in Canada my whole life, and I just found out that we have a city called Thompson. I had to look it up just to figure out which province it was in. Manitoba, apparently. 13,678 people, which puts it well out of the top 100 for the country. This is probably the smallest community, both by numbers and by ranking, for any of these quizzes so far.
It's tiny and relatively new (barely 50 years old - started solely as a mining town), but plays a lot bigger, since it's the transportation, government, service, and goods hub for all of northern Manitoba - in particular the many Indigenous communities. A town of comparable size outside the north in Canada wouldn't have anywhere close to the same importance.
Great quiz, enjoyed that!.. Perhaps Nottingham instead of Liverpool for UK's white portion. Liverpool is just in the blue, whilst it's the Wirral in white. But that's me nit picking. Well done!
Thank you! I am changing the white stripe to Nottingham. Liverpool is a bit of a stretch (although I believe my source exaggerates Liverpool's size so that it encompasses Wirral).
These are great! I love how you just cut the borders instead of aligning each of them to correctly fit their subdivisions ie the Canadian maple leaf takes up parts of multiple provinces...I wonder how you're even able to do that!
Thank you! It's time consuming, but I trace the borders of each country, within the colour region. The paths for all the different subdivisions are just lines and have no fill, and they overlay on top of everything else. It's really hard to explain, however now that this quiz is featured anyone can download the map for themselves.
My bad. I used citypopulation.de's city population figures for each country, and since there are subdivisions included here, it isn't hard to figure where cities are. The nice since about citypopulation is that they have their data plotted on a map, and that makes it much easier to see which city is biggest in any given area of the country.
Trying to think of a way you could colour the flags using a criterion other than largest settlement. I suspect I'll struggle more if you have fewer European countries in the next one!!
It would be hard to include many non-European countries, not just because of the difficulty guessing, but because Europe loves tricolour flags. Tricolours make life so much easier :)
it should be named "biggest city" not just cities, because limerick didnt work for ireland, and cusco/cuzco didnt work for peru. even though theyre very big cities in their area
