Translations may not be perfect, so feel free to correct them! Few words translate perfectly from language to language, and while I did my best to research the grammar in certain languages to make the highlighting more accurate, it will never be perfect.
Just as a hint, pay attention to which countries colonised the countries that speak these languages, if you know what to look for this can help you loads (especially in loanwords).
also who didn't get englishGood thing that the sentence is correct, too. I'm a little surprised at how accurate Google Translate can be, so long as you remove all ambiguity from the sentence.
I put English in again so that everyone knew what the sentence meant, and as a sort of a free answer, but it looks like it is easy to misclick or get it wrong, I do that all the time on mobile (or perhaps someone clicks through and guesses all the answers, haha).
YAYY TELUGU REPRESENTATION!!!Thanks for adding it!
i read the telugu sentence first and i was so confused what viyanna means until i realized it's vienna lolI realised while making the quiz just how hard it would be! I almost chose a South African language with click consonants (Xhosa, Zulu), but in writing the click consonants aren't obvious, so I decided to test people on their Afrikaans instead. There are some really neat, yet obscure clues too (for example the Tagalog sentence uses a loanword from Spanish "concierto").
YOU’LL BE ARRESTED...
...
...YOU STOLE ALL MY PRAISES
(Thinking now, Mozambique, Angola, blah blah aren’t represented also, so... 😐🤔
And obrigado :)
Eu que agradeço! :) (NINGUÉM ME SEGURA COM PORTUGUÊS! 🇧🇷 🇵🇹 🇦🇴 🇲🇿 🇬🇼 🇹🇱 🇸🇹 🇨🇻 🇲🇴)
also how do you mess me up every time by putting multiple romance languagesThis is how the Telugu sentence would sound if read clearly:
/ˈʋɐt͡ʃːeː ˈʋäːɾɐm ˈneːnu ˈʋiːjɐnnäːloː ˈd͡ʒɐɾigeː ˈkäːt͡ʃeːɾiːloː ɐˈkäːɾɖijɐn ˈʋäːjist̪äːnu/
And this is how it would be pronounced more casually:
/ˈɔt͡ʃːeː ˈʋäːɾə̃ʊ̯ ˈneːnʊ ˈʋiːjɛnnäːloː ˈzɐɾɪge ˈkäːt͡ʃeːɾiːloː ɐˈkɒːɾɖijən ˈʋäːjɪst̪äː/
I feel like a whole quiz could be dedicated to guessing languages based on a sample in IPA, although of course it would only appeal to the more hardcore language fans haha :)
after 3 monthsof a quiz of English dialects in IPA.(Amazing quiz by the way)
would be great if at the end it showed up what languages they all are, either when scrolling through after completion or in the stats table. a lot of them are self-explanatory (Czech, Romanian) but i'd like to know what the ones in India and Somalia are
