Note: previous version of this quiz had inaccurate data so I removed the comments.

And yes, New Zealand produces 4 tons of milk per person. A lot gets exported.

It's actually insane how much milk a cow can make. In the US, an average dairy cow produces more than 10 metric tons per year. And that's up by more than 60% since the year 2000.

I guessed New Zealand because they also make a lot of cheese, surprised Denmark isn't on here. Argentina is famous for their beef. Others are mainly just big countries.

Still surprising that little New Zealand produces 2.5 times as much milk as Australia.

It's why New Zealand has electeda cow into parliament yet Australia has not.

To be fair, Australia excluding the outback is not astronomically bigger than New Zealand so it kinda makes sense.

I'm surprised by the lack of African countries, I thought maybe Nigeria, South Africa or Kenya would be in here.

I'm wondering how India and Pakistan produce that much milk without enough grasslands...

Cows aren't usually fed on grass in the USA btw (it's mostly corn I believe)

Cattle are ruminants and must have roughage in their diets. Cows fed only on corn grain would probably die. Dairy cows in my part of the US are usually fed on hay, silage, and put on pasture part of the year. They are fed supplemental feed to provide extra protein, minerals, and other needs. We have a small cow/calf beef herd, and our mothers are on pasture and given hay in the winter months. Our feeder steers are on pasture and hay until time for finishing them for market, when they start getting supplemental feed, usually a mixture of soy meal and corn chops with minerals added in addition to hay and pasture. We use a ratio of six parts soy to 1.5 parts corn chops. This gives a protein percentage of fifteen percent. Each feeder calf gets three lbs. per day in addition. Our mothers get some supplemental grain as needed, such as when lactating or during times when the pasture is poor quality due to drought. Feeding is a science and recommendations are always changing.

And that was a very basic explanation. Through the years we have experimented with our feed formula, including things such as flax meal, spent distillers grain, or wheat. Then silage is another thing that varies. It can be many types of green plants, including corn plants that have begun to tassel, but not made ears. The green plants are cut and put into large silos or pits and covered and allowed to ferment. Our neighbor makes baleage out of his alfalfa, baling the green plants linto large, round bales, where it ferments inside the wrapping. Believe me, silage does not smell pretty, but the cattle seem to love it. End of tutorial. 😉

India has the world's largest milk industry.

It also has enough grassland. Also, we have a huge agricultural sector.
