Food and Drink that are an Acquired Taste (by Picture)

An acquired taste is an appreciation for something unlikely to be enjoyed by a person who has not had substantial exposure to it. It is the opposite of innate taste, which is the appreciation for things that are enjoyable by most persons without prior exposure to them. In case of food and drink, the difficulty of enjoying the product may be due to a strong odor, taste, mouthfeel, appearance, or association. Name these foods and drinks that are often thought of as an acquired taste.

Which of these do you like? Hate? I like most of them! However, not the biggest fan of balut and didn't like natto much but would be willing to give it another try. Haggis is the only one I've never tried...

I generally don't mind trying new things, but I want no part of balut. Yikes.

Tried all but the bottom row and don't hate any of them. Though I'd never spread Marmite that thickly!

Does anyone have the cilantro/coriander gene that makes it taste like soap?

I suggest olives for the next part. I've met only one other who eats the things willingly.

Then, just to throw something out there: sauerkraut, mämmi, canned tuna, pickled beet, coconut, salty liquorice (aka salmiak liquorice) and, if it were possible to find a recognizable pic, Retsina (Greek wine with resin in the mix).

Haha, great choice for a thumbnail.

I'm a vegetarian so the various meat dishes are unappealing to me, but balut and haggis seem especially vile. Natto always looked gross to me, too, but I've never tried it. I do love beer, coffee, chili peppers and Brussels sprouts though.

Fun quiz!

Wine is the stereotypical acquired taste.

Its recipe is as follows:

1 part vinegar

1 part grape juice

A splash of vodka
