One of the largest communities of the San Francisco Bay area, with over 95% of the island urbanized. It was once a peninsula connected to the city of Oakland, with the inlet becoming flooded sometime in the late 1800s.

A group of rocky islands that, shared with Russia, define the world's International Date Line.
Diomedes
MI
Referred to by its native inhabitants as "Minong", it is the largest lake island in the United States, and a designated national park. There are no permanent human settlements, but a large ecosystem of grey wolves introduced in the 1900s.
Isle Royale
CA
Namesake of a Pacific island chain, administered by Los Angeles County as a small community and nature reserve. Perhaps best known as the site of the mysterious 1981 death of actress Natalie Wood.
Santa Catalina
AS
Known to the native Tokelau as "Olohega", this island ceded under the Guano Islands Act of 1856 is part of an ongoing territorial dispute with New Zealand; it's currently administered as a part of American Samoa.

The largest city-owned island park in the U.S., administered by Detroit on the namesake's river. It was once a large pig farm estate directed by the French colonists of Québec.
Belle Isle
AK
The U.S.'s second largest island by area, and home of the native Alutiiq people for centuries. It was almost entirely destroyed following the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake.
