Slovenia just announced plans to recognize Palestine as a state. As much as it is an incredibly contentious issue, I think JetPunk should at least consider adding Palestine as a country given its significant increase in recognition in 2024.
As soon as Slovenia or another European country recognizes Palestine, this quiz will be updated. It is up to the Quizmaster to decide whether to add Palestine. Maybe that will happen in the near future.
I used to defend Jetpunk's decision based on the issue of Israel's erosion of Palestinian sovereignty and the fact that the West Bank and Gaza are governed separately.
When you look at other countries, however, you realise that not all of the Jetpunk countries have 'full sovereignty,' such as Nauru and its dependency on Australia, Palau, FS Micronesia and Marshall Islands' associated status with the US (which is similar to the situation in the Cook Islands and Niue with New Zealand except they aren't UN members). Then you have countries like Yemen and Libya which are split between different forces claiming legitimacy. These countries in effect haven't been united in years.
Even the Vatican City is included as a Jetpunk country. I think it's more than fair to add Palestine, and that the main obstacle to adding Palestine is that Jetpunk tends to side with US policy (it took many years for Burma to change to Myanmar on Jetpunk for example).
I also think it would make sense to add them solely for the fact that they are recognized by 145 of the 193 member states and holds the non-member observer state status equal to the Holy See. This really should put it above Kosovo and Taiwan as being recognized on JetPunk (although I am all for recognizing both Kosovo and Taiwan).
I understand the normal response of it not having "full control of its borders". But this does seem to be the case for some other countries as mentioned by Jiaozira. And though I would understand if it was the case of following the US's stance, this would remove Taiwan from the list (at least officially).
That being said I understand Palestine is a difficult topic, one that I keep my opinion out of because I don't believe I am educated enough on the matter for my opinion to hold weight. And regardless of this I will continue to use JetPunk as by far the best quiz site on the market.
