Is Tampa just Tampa bay county, or does it include the smaller republican suburb counties like Pinellas etc.

It includes the suburbs. Pinellas and Hillsborough both mostly voted for Biden. See here

Ok now I get it, the reason Trump barely won Tampa is that he blew out Biden in Pasco, Polk, and Manatee counties. The same thing happened with Jacksonville. Florida is actually pretty close, the reason Biden lost is that he couldn't turn out voters in Miami. Great Quiz!

Weird to see Pittsburgh here.

Per my calculations, the only MSA's with over 1 million people that still vote Republican are Salt Lake City (D 49%), Cincinnati (48%), Grand Rapids (48%), Jacksonville (46%), Birmingham (45%), Dayton (45%), Oklahoma City (44%), Greenville (37%) and Tulsa (36%). I actually do research in that subject. Of course it all comes down to how the MSA's are defined. For example, I only include Allegheny county for Pittsburgh (D 60%).

Got it. Saw the article. It has a bunch of inaccurate statements. Thanks for replying though.

Just went through and checked the statistics manually. The data in this quiz is correct. Where are you getting your information from?

My bet is that the source includes too many rural counties, which is not unusual in the definition of an MSA/ CSA. While the numbers may be correct they are of little help due to the broad definition. For example, Pittsburgh's CSA "official" definition includes 9 PA counties, 2 WV counties and 1 OH county, some of which are pretty much disconnected with the economy of Pittsburgh. Even the Pittsburgh MSA includes 7 counties, which may be the right thing to do in a place like San Francisco or New York, but not for Pittsburgh. So let me correct my previous message. Your numbers are probably right, but even so it's not the best base for the analysis. That's why the article conclusions are misleading.

Generally on Jetpunk the populations used for cities are Metropolitan Statistical Areas, which provide a better view of how the cities and their surrounding areas actually look. If I only included the official city proper, this quiz would be full of cities with less than 100,000 people and would be largely irrelevant. Using the population totals I am it allows for larger cities to be included when their suburbs generally vote red. Also all the data I am able to find goes by counties so using city proper would be unrealistic logistically. I don't think there's any way to improve on what I've done here, but if you have any suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.

The problem is not in the urban suburban boundary. Instead, it's in the suburban to rural. Thing about this, from the article itself: "The average Biden metro is home to almost 1.3 million people, more than four times the size of the average Trump metro, with just slightly more than 300,000 people. As metros get smaller in size, Biden’s share of the vote drops off, while Trump’s rises". Be sure that for the small metros they are counting a lot of cows and trees. The analysis really requires a unit larger than the city but, in many cases, smaller than MSA/CSA. That's what I do. For example (and many people don't like it) I don't include Solano county in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area. This is because it's too far and there aren't a lot of commuters. You are onto something. This is an area of knowledge that requires more standardization.

By the way, I wouldn't mind pasting my spreadsheet for everyone's use once all results are certified. States that haven't certified include CA, MD, MO, NJ, PA, WA.

Good quiz. Even though I can ace the top 100 cities of the world and capital cities, it's hard because generally urban areas vote democratic. Maybe consider adding extra hints?
