Helsingborg? "It had 108,334 inhabitants in 2017."

Norrkoping? "Population (31 March 2016)

• Total 137,326"

This quiz uses urban areas. I've added a caveat.

Nice update. One thing: Aalborg and Odense are in the wrong places.

They were in the right spot for me, but Helsingborg and Västeras were switched, that really confused me.

for me norrkoping was where jonkoping is, vasteras was where norrkoping is, uppsala was where vasteras is, and jonkoping wasn't on the map

I wanted to make the answers an even 40. Denmark is the smallest of the Nordic countries by area, so it made sense.

Denmark might be the smallest by area, but the 2nd most popoulous. And the quiz is about population, so it doesn't really make sense that size would matter. It matters in other aspects though. ;)

It does matter for the purposes of this quiz because the cities are shown on the map. If there were 10 Danish cities that part of the map would be extremely cluttered.

Copenhagen's city proper doesn't only consist of Copenhagen Municpality which is what you used. It also includes Dragør, Tårnby and Frederiksberg municipality, one of which holds more than 100k people as well. So Copenhagen's city proper is actually at 794,182 as of 2020. according to this wikipedia aricle

Not sure why the Swedish names were only accepted for some of the Finnish cities. Some consistency wouldn't hurt.

Any swedes out there- what is "ping" at the end of cities like Linkoping and Jonkoping mean? Does it mean something like town, burg, ville, or something?
+5
Level 70
Jul 7, 2024
"ping" means nothing, in this context. The suffix is "Köping", which would translate roughly as "market town" so you're not far off. They were historical trading hubs.

I'm curious as to why Denmark and Iceland only get 5 cities each when the others get 10. I kinda get that Iceland has fewer people and thus smaller cities but Denmark could easily have 10 cities included without it being some random small towns.

Why does Denmark only have 5 when it's more populous than Norway or Finland? I kind of get the clutter issue, but that's why you can zoom in on the map, and also with the way the next 5 cities would be spaced, it would still be better than the clutter around Reykjavik or Oslo.
