Spankapotomus, I can understand the USA having two top leagues then playoffs, its a large country and in Europe teams complain about how tiring it is to travel to a different country for the champions league but London to Paris is nothing compared to New York to Seattle. Also we have welsh teams in the English divisions such as Cardiff and Swansea so I can also understand having the best Canadian team in the MLS. Although it does annoy me that you call it soccer.

and why oh why when an American team wins there league are they known as the WORLD champions??? when Manchester United or whoever win the Premier League they don't become World Champions. simply the English champions. you surely cannot be called the world champions when your only playing against teams from your own country

But it's inconsistent that "Madrid" is accepted for Real Madrid, and doesn't hold with any of the above arguments for doing so. So please accept Bucharest, Belgrade, etc. or don't accept Madrid
+1
Level 76
Aug 27, 2020
Same for Turin, Rotterdam and Lisbon. Why is only the club name accepted with those, and not the city? Even if there are several clubs from the same city/town, the ones on the list are usually the most well known. As Chip said, Madrid is accepted (although there are two different ones), as is Munich (without Bayern), although there is also 1860 Munich. Clearly no consistency here.
+1
Level 79
Oct 16, 2023
It doesn't accept city names because they're not in those club names and/or nobody uses the city name to refer to the club. Nobody refers to Juve as Turin (because there's a Torino FC), nobody refers to Feyenoord as Rotterdam even though it's in the name, and nobody refers to Benfica as Lisboa or Lisbon. Real Madrid is often just called Madrid, and Atletico Madrid often just called Atletico. And no serious fan of the game would dream of referring to 1860 Munich as Munich, that's just for Bayern. The quiz asks for the clubs not the cities, and it rightly accepts common alternatives to the full club names, some of which happen to be cities.
+2
Level 54
Jan 14, 2022
Well, when people say Munich or Madrid in football context, everyone understands they refer to Bayern and Real. That doesn't really work for those other cities. It's not really about a consistent ''rule''.

It wasn't called the Champion's League until recently. Prior to 1992 it was the European Champion's Cup and you actually had to be your country's Champions (or the current holder) to qualify. Nowadays you can qualify without being a champion and also have a chance at the Europa League if you get knocked in the group stage. Just a money spinning exercise to squeeze as much dosh as possible out of the average football fan to pay stupid wages. UTV
