English Second-Tier (EFL Championship) Play-Off Finalists
Play-offs were introduced to the English Football League in the 1986–87 season. Over the years, 40 different clubs have appeared in the second tier’s play-off final. How many can you name?
* See comments for some additional information.
You can find an equivalent quiz on National League play-off finalists here. My other football quizzes can be found here, and all of my quizzes can be found together here.
* The team that won the 1990 final did not gain promotion due to being found guilty of financial irregularities, and the runners-up were duly promoted instead.
The first two seasons of the play-offs saw three teams from the top end of one division and one team from the lower end of the division above compete to either gain promotion or avoid relegation.
The second tier was known as the Second Division until 1992 when the formation of the Premier League saw the First Division become the second-highest division. A rebranding in 2004 saw the First Division renamed as the “Championship”.
