Launceston is a city. The oldest town (without doing any research) is probably New Norfolk.

Unless I'm mistaken both Hobart and George Town predate Launceston by a few years, founded around 1803/4 compared to Launceston's 1806.

I also know that George Town cheekily likes to call itself "the oldest town in Australia," on the basis that Sydney, Hobart and Launceston are cities.

Yes, George Town is older than New Norfolk. And of course as I said above, Launceston is a city.

Nice quiz :) As others have said, Hobart and George Town were established before Launceston, and please also accept "kunanyi" as an answer for the mountain that overlooks Hobart, it's officially dual named as kunanyi / Mount Wellington :))
