Always interpreted it as them giving a new set of gifts every day and then just restating the gifts they had previously been given. so like 78 gifts total. 364 gifts is a lot!

I am pretty sure Saint Nicholas isn't an equivalent for Santa Claus. Although, Santa Claus was based on the historical person Saint Nicholas of Myra.
