Word quizzes aren't as common as they should be. Thank you for creating a fun one, and here, take this nomination!

Suffixes to the rescue! Love this series.

I could have sworn that "otherly" was a word. Seems I made it up...

Maybe you're combining the words "other worldly"?

Time limit is too strict for me. I think 5 minutes would be appropriate for this kind of quiz.

The average is high and more than 25% of people get all or all but 1, feels like enough time to me.

You can always replay!

I think the time limit is really low too. I don't generally like how quizzes have low time limits though so that's just my personal preference

It's low, but I don't think it's too low.

If you're looking for a quicker strategy, I would encourage you to find short 4 letter verbs that can simply add -ing, or 5 letter verbs that can be added -ed to it. Zoom through a bunch that way

Fun. I came up with the same strategy. After awhile I just started putting in random four-letter words to see if they can be "ing"ed. It usually worked!

It's crazy how, despite there being significantly more options for a correct answer, this one is harder than the four-letter word quiz

Pizzazz is a legitimate seven letter word, however it is not a possible play in Scrabble. With only one Z and two blank tiles in the game, it isn't possible to make a four z word.

One of the quirks of using Scrabble as the dictionary for these quizzes. I am impressed that Pizzazz was the word you thought of!

Yeah, I don't know why that's a piece of trivia that has stuck in my head. I am sure there are other words that are unplayable in Scrabble, but that's the one I know.

BTW, thanks for the fun and challenging puzzle! I leaned too hard on six letter plurals though. :)

I think the time limit (3:00 minutes) is well-chosen. I usually don't like "time pressure" unless that's the point of the quiz, but this is one where, with too much time, the quiz is just too flabby because there's so many answers. Less than 3 and it would just be all about time pressure; more than 3 and it's too easy. This is one quiz (besides the speed typing ones) where the time limit is an integral part of the challenge but it's not just fast typing.

If English is there, then why not other languages such as Marathi, Burmese or Persian for example.
+1
Level 68

Blame Scrabble, it treats "english" as a normal noun, unlike the proper noun referring to the language of English.
+1
Level 80

Perhaps the billiards term english? Although even that seems to be capitalized
+1
Level 72
Mar 31, 2024
Apparently not. Wiktionary has it without the capital. I must say I have never heard of the word (with this meaning) then again, I don't play billiards. They say etymology unclear. But to me (Even before I read the etymology was unknow/uncertain) as soon as I read the example sentence, give it some english, it felt it had a strong connection to angles. And when I read the second meaning, this seemed to match even better. (looking at thing from different angles)

(And for those that like to argue and attack, yes I am aware of the concept of folketymology. But that doesn't mean if you (as a non professional, whatever that may entail) see a connection it is inherently wrong,.
