Random Sequential Countries on the World Map - Hard Version
Name all 196 countries of the World on a map, in a randomly generated order. The answer must correspond to the blue highlighted country. In this harder version, the countries disappear again once you've answered them correctly!
Click the map to zoom!
The progress bar at the bottom shows your progression through the quiz.
The order changes every time you play!
For the smaller countries, an arrow or ring may appear to guide you.
Great, thanks a lot! Two suggestions: maybe it would be 'fair' to add a few parallels (equators and tropics?) and/or meridians; for the tiny Caribbean countries it would be nice to have a magnifying lens that shows the space so you don't have to go through guessing them all every time (I don't even know how that could be done). Thanks again, very enjoyable!
It is actually the same map, but with a few modifications to allow the countries to maximise the space available. Such as removing the top of Canada and Greenland, shrinking the Atlantic Ocean, and cutting off a bit of Alaska. It seemed to help especially with the smaller countries to make them just a tad more visible without the map looking drastically different.
For me, shrinking the Atlantic lead to mixing up South America and the Caribbean with West Africa a lot.
Given that it's a blind map and we can zoom in to see country outlines (with island countries it's a guessing game anyways), I'd suggest scaling the Atlantic back up :)
Srsly though, how do you mix up the Bahamas with Cabo Verde? Or Sierra Leone with the DR? It's pretty obvious which is which if you actually look at the shapes.
The problem is without any shrinkage, the caribbean islands are too small when zooming in. Now, you can just about tell their shape with zooming, which is a greater benefit in my opinion.
I'm glad the suggestions to make it easier have been resisted, I really enjoyed the extra challenge! And it's so relieving when a country like Canada comes up and you can take a quick breather...
I have learnt all the positions of the carribean countries but on an empty map it's impossible to guess from one go except for trinidad and antigua since they have 2 islands
This was thoroughly enjoyable. I imagine only serious nerds are taking it, and answer stats suggest that's true: 36 takes so far, with 65% getting them all right.
I ended up being very fast- nearly 18 minutes left, would be interested to know the average of those that finish. Although obviously the geographic location is a big clue, without the others to reference, I found that shape recognition is huge, something that I think I'm good at, even with the smaller/less distinctive countries. I found small countries in Europe/Balkans most difficult, even more than island states.
It would also be nice if at the end of the quiz - whichever way it has finished - the entire map is revealed showing what you have achieved, i.e. which countries you have guessed and which are still missing. It would be a good learning factor. Don't know if this can be done at all, just an idea.
No matter how many times I typed Samoa, it wasn't accepted. Pointlessly typed every country in Oceania three times, Samoa a few more times, and had to give up.
And yet, the second attempt worked and I got 100%. It was definitely Samoa that wouldn't take on the first attempt. Even if it wasn't, I tried every country in Oceania multiple times.
That was challenging, especially the Antilles and Oceania. And I don't know why I was confused about Africa so many times, but I got so disoriented there, thinking it was a country in West Africa, but it was actually in central Africa. Still I got them all. Excellent quiz!
Never have I been so disappointed to get all but 2..... The small Caribbean islands are killer when you have to type out St. Kitts and St. Lucia and St. Vincent and ........ Those all seemed to come at the end for me, so I had to do them over and over. :-/ Oh well, try again.
I got Djibouti with 0:06 left, it was a nailbiter. My first country was Vatican and I didn't realize until halfway through that I could tab to advance the question -- not sure why I didn't try sooner.
Not being able to see the oceans or continent forms made it so much harder, but I appreciate the challenge. I really didn't think I'd get it but there was just enough time for me.
Bah!!! Ran out of time with 6 left. It took so much time just cycling through every Polynesian island country whenever I got one, and by the end I had forgotten which ones I had already written.
The first time I read this I thought you meant you were handwriting a list of everything you'd guessed. Now that would be dedication, but probably the best way to make sure you got them all!
Wow what a quiz! You almost get into a trance lol. I misspelled Solomon Islands near the start and went a little insane trying to think what it was before trying it again. Deserved feature!
Wow! I finished when I thought I still had heap left! Also the circle thing for the Maldives seems to be not as long as it is on other quizzes. That sort of threw me off.
On mobile you might need to scroll left/right a little to see the whole map. Also you may have been zoomed in accidentally, meaning only a small portion of the map would be visible.
I don't understand this at all. I got 0 because it showed a tiny country in what appeared to the the top center of a map, but it wasn't any northern European or Baltic nation. It never told me what it was. Are they just randomly shown without regard to where they lie on a map?
They are in the same position as the normal world map. When you finish the quiz, everything you missed is shown and you can hover on them to see what they were. Since the order is randomized, it means JetPunk doesn't show stats afterwards.
If you started with a small country, perhaps refreshing the page would make this make more sense. This harder version doesn't retain countries on the map after you guess them, so I would recommend doing the original quiz first so you understand the general concept.
sometimes if you click on the empty map the magnified page will stay and distort the world map, then what you think is far North could be just North of the little segment of the map that you clicked on.
Not sure if it is a glitch but I kept entering the correct spelling of 'Maldives' where it was necessary but it wouldn't give me the point. Great quiz though
wow, this one is quite a challenge! i had to give up with 2 left: sierra leone and the maldives. i always typed in maledives with this extra e as it is malediven in german, oops
Finished first try in 23 mins, had 7 left. Without any frame of reference, and not even their shapes, the caribbean and oceania islands were just a guess-game until I got them xP
Would it be possible to have an option to change the background color? staring at -mostly- white screen for so long became a little uncomfortable in the eyes. Maybe a more sepia tone.
Most oceanic countries do have distinguishable shape
About half of the carribean countries are also distinguishable (barely though, like trinidad and tobago is the closest one to mainland south america)
I did confuse the locations of mauritius, comoros, seychelles, and maldives, because they have the same shape in this, however i eventually got them all.
I really should do these types of quizzes in front of an audience. For anyone to complete this at all is quite the feat. Doing so as quickly as I did (I'm a slow typist) makes it that much more impressive. Thanks for taking the time to create such a phenomenal quiz. Truly.
Tried Trinidad and Tobago for about 14 different countries, and it turned out to be my LAST one. Took me a good 20 seconds to remember it existed once i got there.
T&T is actually pretty easy to differentiate - it's a big island right at the southern end of all the Caribbean islands, whose shape you can just about make out without the zoom.
I didn't know it would be every country in the world when I started! I would have saved it for later if I had read description first. That took almost 15 minutes!
They no longer use custom styling, but also more importantly, the stats for them is now relevant. (It's the first step of trying to provide "useful" stats for randomized quizzes). So the stats you see after this quiz (and on the quiz stats page) are all correct and appropriate. Previously they all got jumbled up due to our normal randomizer system, so the results were pretty much even.
Did it with 21:59 remaining (8:01 elapsed) - pretty proud of myself considering I can never keep straight the physical locations of half of those little Caribbean and Oceanian island nations.
I was able to get it, but I had a heck of a time trying to get Maldives. The shape seems off on this map compared to the other ones I'm used to (it's usually more elongated, rather than just a circle).
Unfortunately this is still the "old" JetPunk world map, from before the SVG Update in 2020. So Maldives, Tuvalu, Palau and Kiribati are noticeably different.
Sorry, Stewie. No go for me. I tried your 'easy' version and got through with love and promises. This 'hard' version will have some computer cartographers in sanatoriums thinking they are Napoleon and wondering if Ajaccio is the capital of Sardinia or Corsica.
Great quiz. One small suggestion...use a different color for the small island countries that have been made visible by an unofficial enclosure containing mostly ocean. This would make it clear that we're not trying to interpret these as shapes of countries. It's not a huge problem, since these enclosures are generally much more rounded in appearance than actual country boundaries, but still it's a relevant distinction.
I thought I was doing so well, and then I spent a full five minutes trying every country in the Balkans (plus some eastern Europe just to be safe) about three times, absolutely losing my mind, only to find out it was Belgium all along. Very great! Had a fun time with this one :-)

(I think that's more important)
Especially since I'm still learning to type fast; Finished with 10:16 left.
After some complicated CSS, I found a way to have all answers hide when guessed, but show up post game!
Check out my flags quiz

Strangely, the only country I struggled with was Slovakia.
did the quiz in 9:45
yeah i am pro
first try btw

Great quizz, thanks for making it! :D

Senegal was my last country :D
