❤️ Thank you so much for the support over the years! This was my first featured quiz and so to reach 100k on this quiz in particular (even though it isn't the 1st or even the 2nd) is really nice.
I added the "date" column to this quiz. The dates for China and India are very approximate. The Russian Empire attained a population of 100 million in the 1800's, but the part that is currently Russia didn't reach 100 million until 1930.
Mexico has a fertility rate of around 2.1, just about the replacement rate, and so its population is still growing, just not very quickly. Japan, on the other hand, has a very low fertility rate of 1.3, and so its population has begun to shrink. Japan used to be higher in the rankings in past decades, and it will probably continue to go down as it's replaced by very high fertility countries in Africa.
A lot of that Mexican fertility rate is going toward keeping the US population from declining... where fertility rate is currently 1.64 but immigration keeps the country and economy growing.
Egypt is a country that is coming very close to 100 million people. There are 104 million Egyptians worldwide but 9 million of those live outside the country. Whatever the number, Egypt is definitely going to be the next country on this list.
Vietnam has a net growth of 0.9m and dropping, and congo of 2.8m and rising. I think congo will beat them (if things continue on the same trend, no wars etc)
No, I think Vietnam will get there first. Perhaps some time in the next 2 or 3 years. D.R.C will take marginally longer, maybe 3 or 4 years. But it will be close so I could end up being wrong.
Almost forgot Japan. Of course, if current trends continue, Japan could become the first country to fall off this list, though not for another couple decades at least.
I missed India, once again because it was an answer I thought I had already typed. Note to brain: Make sure the fingers have finished before you move on to the next answer.
Dont think you have used the same (in my opinion very accurate, in contrast with other sources sometimes used for quizzes, which use outdated data or are rough estimates) source as this quiz. Vietnam is currently (March 22, 2020) 97.097.000 and in 2019 (I think that is midyear) it was 96.462.000
estimate for midyear 2020 is 97.339.000 and in 2025 is it over the 100m threshold with 101.107.000 (I rounded all numbers to 1.000)
So either you were a year ahead of time or made a 96/97 typo ;)
Congo actually seems to be next in line, currently 88.794.000, but it grows faster, estimated to be 104.134.000 so 3 millions more than vietnam, probably reaching it a year earlier than them.
I don't know where you got 132 million as the population for Mexico but it has never reached that so as of yet. It is 126 million on Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Mexico
And on Worldometer, it is 129 million: https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/mexico-population/
This should be updated since Pakistan passed Brazil over a year ago. Nigeria will pass Brazil in a year or two, but you probably shouldn't wait that long.
As an note for anyone who is interested in demography or South Asian history, Bangladesh was actually more populous than Pakistan at independence. 1988 is interesting not only because it's the year that both countries hit 100 million people but also because it's a sort of inflection point at which the Pakistani population overtook the Bangladeshi population.
Man, I am always impressed seeing Egypt's population numbers. I'll continue to be impressed by them as well when the years go on, and they get 150 mil, 200 mil, etc etc.
It's kind of funny to me how these massive countries just... go unnoticed. When's the last time you heard something out of Ethiopia, Bangladesh, or the D.R. Congo?
uh, pretty recently... Ethiopia in particular has been in the news a lot this year due to the Tigray War there, but there's certainly been reporting about various events and issues in the DRC & Bangladesh in the recent past as well.
The previous quiz used the 2022 edition which had Vietnam at under 100 million.
2016 data is here
11/14😞

I think you have made a mistake
And on Worldometer, it is 129 million: https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/mexico-population/

But there's still a difference. Including Puerto Rico explains some of it. As does the 2024 vs 2023 distinction.
But there's also likely a methodology difference. Large amounts of illegal immigration mean the numbers are pretty fuzzy at this point.
