i was out here trying to find out why 'former yugoslavic republic of macedonia' and democratic people's republic of korea' etc didnt count.. didnt think of this..
Yes, same as above, thought the exact spelling was required... which was what made the idea quite bright as for once one would have had to spell it all!
Nice quiz! I always wondered why the Quizmaster doesn't accept RSA as an acronym for South Africa. It's used in sports and is quite similar to KSA as well.
It's because Ireland's official name is just Ireland. Not Republic of Ireland, which is actually an unofficial name to differentiate it from the island Ireland.
Not interesting at all. This is one of my pet peeves, people who incorrectly "well ackshually" about the country of Ireland being the 'Republic of Ireland', which it is NOT.
Maybe it's time to retire FYROM as a type-in for North Macedonia. Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia was a provisional name used by many agencies (including the UN) while the naming dispute was being sorted out, and that was finally resolved in February 2019.
Never before have I typed in "u-n-i-t-e-d-k-i-n-g-d-o-m" in a JetPunk quiz until now, and... it feels way longer and more difficult than it should be, lol
Some of these I often use - like PRC - but they're not the way I actually think of the country. But my brain froze up when confronted with UAE, because that's the only way I ever write, speak or even think about it. Same with UK. Writing out the whole name took a surprising amount of effort, I'm just so used to the short form.
Also, hate to be *that guy*, but almost none - or possibly none - of these are actually acronyms. It is only an acronym if you pronounce the shortened form as a word. The airline QANTAS for example - pronounced Kwon-tuss or thereabouts, for the uninitiated - is an acronym with the letters standing for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services. Laser - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation - is an acronym. In CD-ROM, CD is not an acronym because you just read the letters, but ROM is, because you pronounce it as a word. These are initialisms.
"An acronym is a word or name formed from the initial components of a longer name or phrase, usually using individual initial letters, as in NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) or EU (European Union), but sometimes using syllables, as in Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg), or a mixture of the two, as in radar (RAdio Detection And Ranging). Similarly, acronyms are sometimes pronounced as words, as in NASA or UNESCO, sometimes as the individual letters, as in FBI or ATM, or a mixture of the two, as in JPEG or IUPAC."
I'm still confused why we can't stop typing after Dominican Rep, it's clear you know what's coming by then. Just to distinguish from Dominica. When DR was accepted, obviously that was even more amazing :)
Look I know it's not called that anymore, but if FYROM is accepted then you really should accept "Former Yugolsav republic of Macedonia" on this quiz because that's what it actually stands for.
In fact, you should accept what the acronym stands for on all of them, or clarify the title because it seems like you are asking for the acronym, not the country.
I sat here for a solid minute typing every variation of "Republic of the Congo," "Congo-Brazzaville," etc. I could think of before I realized it was referring to the other ROC.
I gave up after typing "Kingdom of Saudi Arabia" a few times, checking my spelling, and then deciding it wasn't worth my time...silly of me (?) not to think of typing simply "Saudi Arabia!"
Nice idea anway)
Thanks!
NZ and KSA - 27th April 2020
DR - 20th April 2020
The country is named 'Ireland'.
It’s also not accepted as a type-in for Australia.

I really hate to be this guy
RNA or UN are not :)
In French acronym shall be read as a word. If it is only initials we call it "sigle" i.e. initialism like CIA or FBI or TNT.
In fact, you should accept what the acronym stands for on all of them, or clarify the title because it seems like you are asking for the acronym, not the country.
(GB is the island containing England, Scotland, and Wales, while the UK is the country that the above - plus Northern Ireland - make up)
So glad DR is FINALLY accepted.
I still just type "Macedonia" because "North" Macedonia is dumb and FYROM is ridiculous.
The rest will be welcome when playing.
One point - these are initialisms, not acronyms.
Really should take off "FYROM"
May you be blessed by his noodly appendage! Ramen.
Now please we need them for Afghanistan and BurkinaFaso to help with border-drawing quizzes.
