Terminology Used:

River: A body of water which has, according to the abovementioned source, no connection (arrow) to another.

River system: A system which consists of at least two rivers. There are, however, requirements for this:

A river system has been assumed if it has

1. its source in a lake which is fed by a river of another name (e.g. Göta River -> Lake Vänern -> Klar River)

2. its source at the confluence of two rivers, then following the longer one (e.g. Weser -> Werra)

3. headwaters bearing the same name (e.g. Sava Dolinka -> Sava)

This in return means, that a longer tributary joining the main river later somewhere along its way is NOT considered a river system (e.g. Volga -> Oka or Havel -> Spree)

An exception has been made for the Western Bug, which joins the Narew shortly before flowing into the Vistula. It would’ve otherwise been isolated from the remaining rivers.

Estuaries are included in river length (Elbe, Garonne, Southern Bug).

Wow!! Fantastic! Reminds me of how small Italian rivers are. How did you manage to make such a great map? Just an observation on the map: there are a couple of lakes but the biggest European lakes are missing. Any thoughts on a version with lakes, too?

Thanks a lot! That map got possible after the extension to 600 KB. The lakes represent mouths of rivers (that's why Lake Ladoga or Lake Constance, e.g.) are not shown. I haven't thought of a lake version yet, but maybe soon!

Great quiz, tough! Only got 10 and many I've never heard of. (Somehow 3.2% of takers get all 100, which I find very hard to believe, even considering the hardcore geography buffs we have here.)

Yea getting 60 is already damn impressive ( didnt get anywhere near that) unless you had already specifically focused on rivers, getting higher seems unlikely. Most of these arent basic knowledge.

I never saw the Swedish rivers without "älv" at the end, meaning river. Like "Ume älv". Considering you are omitting the "river" part, you should also accept the Finnish one without "joki". "Joki" = "river".

+1
Level 72
Mar 24, 2020
Really? I noticed that one too, but in dutch it has slightly different meaning (well quite a few actually all with negative connotations, some for actual things others for abstract.

Sludge, gunk, any fowl indiscernible substance actually (like stuff from a clogged sink). (so not actual crap, cause you know what that is)

Abstract it can mean crap, shit (as in crappy weather, I did shit on my exam) stinks, bad, failure

We do have the verb pruttelen, which is mainly used for the sound of a coffeemachine, but could also be used for an engine or, if it is em ... a serial fart... ow and soup boiling.

Basicly anything that sounds like many fast blublublublbub
